D-Tal

Generic name: belladonna alkaloids and phenobarbital [BEL-a-DON-a-AL-ka-loids-and-FEEN-oh-BAR-bi-tal]

Drug class: anticholinergics/antispasmodics

In the U.S., D-Tal has been discontinued. There may be equivalents if generic versions have been approved by the FDA.

What is D-Tal?

D-Tal contains belladonna alkaloids, including atropine, hyoscyamine, and scopolamine, as well as phenobarbital. D-Tal is a combination medication used to treat irritable bowel syndrome as well as ulcers of the intestine. D-Tal can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of D-Tal

When experiencing signs and symptoms of allergic responses (hives or difficulty breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or severe skin reactions such as fever and sore throat with burning eyes/skin/burned blistering/peeling skin/red or purple rashes requiring medical intervention immediately - seek emergency medical assistance immediately.

This medicine can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Fast or pounding heartbeats

  • Blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around light

  • Diarrhea (especially if your colostomy is or is not in place);

  • Reduced sweating with hot or dry skin

  • Urination that is painful or difficult

  • Loss of coordination, slurred words, fainting

  • Suicidal thoughts, confusion, agitation, and depression

  • Fever and sore throat

  • Pale skin, easy bruises, unusual fatigue, cold hands or feet

Older adults may experience side effects like drowsiness and agitation. They can also feel nervous or excited.

D-Tal can cause a number of side effects.

  • Constipation;

  • Reduced sweating or urination

  • Dizziness, drowsiness, weakness;

  • Blurred vision

  • Feeling nervous or excited

  • Dry mouth, nose, or throat

  • Dry skin

  • Nausea, vomiting, and bloating.

Warnings

D-Tal can become habit-forming. Addiction, overdose or death may result from misuse of D-Tal.

Before you take this drug

This medicine should not be used if you have an allergy to atropine or any of the following: hyoscyamine, phenobarbital, or scopolamine. This medication should also not be taken if:

  • Bladder obstruction, an enlarged prostate, or other urination issues;

  • A stomach or obstruction in the bowel (including paralyticileus);

  • Chronic constipation (especially among older adults with a debilitating illness or disability)

  • Severe ulcerative colitis, or toxic megacolon

  • Glaucoma;

  • Reflux disease in conjunction with a hernia

  • Active bleeding is accompanied by rapid heartbeats and low blood Shortness of breath.

  • Porphyria is a genetic disorder of the enzymes that can cause symptoms in the skin and nervous system.

  • An allergy to primidone

  • A muscle disorder known as myasthenia gravis

Inform your physician of any of the following issues:

  • A stomach ailment is also known as ulcerative colitis.

  • A colostomy or ileostomy;

  • A nerve-muscle disorder;

  • Heart problems high blood pressure

  • Gallbladder disease

  • Alcoholism or drug abuse

  • Breathing problems

  • A thyroid disorder

  • Liver or kidney disease

D-Tal may pose risks to an unborn child, but may be worth taking to treat your condition. Inform your physician immediately if you become pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant while using this medication; birth-control pills effectiveness could decrease due to this medication reducing its efficacy; use nonhormonal contraception instead (condoms, diaphragms with spermicide etc) instead for prevention; breast feeding may not be possible while on this drug and its risks should be discussed with your physician first - D-Tal may inhibit breast milk production thus decreasing breast milk production by up to 40%! Do not administer D-Tal to children without first consulting with their physician first!

How to take D-Tal?

Read all instructions or guides that accompany your medication carefully and follow all directions, especially those listed on its label. D-Tal contains phenobarbital which can become addictive over time; misuse may lead to addiction, overdose or death so store this drug safely away from children or anyone who could misuse it. Selling or giving away this medication is illegal; do not chew, crush, or break an extended-release tablet. Measuring liquid medicine accurately is also key; use either the provided dosing device or another tool (not spoons!) for this task. If your symptoms don't improve or worsen as expected, contact your physician as D-Tal can interfere with some medical tests, altering results of other medical exams, as well as impact the storage temperature, moisture levels and light level for safe storage and tracking purposes. Keep a record of what medications you take so they won't get lost or stolen from storage bins. Be wary of anyone misusing or misappropriating your medicine without valid prescription, especially sudden cessation of taking said drug which may trigger unpleasant withdrawal symptoms; consult your physician on how best to discontinue its use safely.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms include headaches, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. They may also include dry mouth, blurred or hot vision, dry or hot skin, difficulty swallowing, or feeling agitated.

What should be avoided?

D-Tal can cause drowsiness, blurred vision, or affect your reaction. Do not drive or engage in any hazardous activities until you have determined how the medicine will affect you. Alcohol consumption can cause certain side effects to be exacerbated. Avoid overheating or dehydration during exercise and hot weather. This medication can cause you to sweat less and be more susceptible to heatstroke.

Interaction with other drug

This medicine can have dangerous side effects when taken with other drugs, which slow breathing. Take D-Tal at least three hours before taking an antacid or three hours after.

Your doctor may adjust your doses for any other medications you regularly take when you begin or stop taking D-Tal. Tell your doctor all of your other medications, including:

  • Potassium supplements;

  • Primidone;

  • John's wort;

  • Antibiotic or antifungal medicines;

  • Heart or blood pressure medications;

  • Antiviral medication to treat hepatitis, hiv/aids, or other viral infections;

  • A blood thinner (such as a warfarin or coumadin).
