Vibativ

Generic name: telavancin [TEL-a-VAN-sin]
Drug class: glycopeptide antibiotics

What is Vibativ?

Vibativ, a prescription-only antibacterial medication, is used to treat certain types of bacterial infections in adults.Vibativ is used for severe skin infections.

Telavancin can also be used to treat bacterial pneumonia in a hospital setting or pneumonia caused by a ventilator.Vibativ is a drug that is administered intravenously.

Warnings

Vibativ may cause more death in certain people than another antibiotic called Vancomycin. This is especially true for people with kidney issues who take Vibativ to treat pneumonia, which can occur while they are hospitalized.

Vibativ may not be suitable for pregnant women. Telavancin was found to cause birth defects in animal studies. Before starting the treatment, you may need a negative pregnancy result.

Tell your doctor about any kidney problems you may have had in the past. You will be required to have your kidney function checked during the course of treatment. If you notice any of the following signs: no or little urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, increased weight, or foamy urine, call your doctor immediately.If you experience a serious side effect such as confusion, watery or bleeding diarrhea, swelling, or shortness of breath, call your doctor immediately.

Before you take this drug

Vibativ should not be used if you have an allergy to telavancin or are using heparin.

Televancin may pose a greater risk to certain people than vancomycin, another antibiotic. The risk is highest for people who have pre-existing kidney issues and use Vibativ as a treatment for pneumonia that they developed in the hospital.

Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that Vibativ will be safe for you:

  • Kidney problems;
  • Diabetes;
  • Heart disease High blood pressure
  • Long-QT syndrome
  • If you have an allergy to vancomycin,
  • If you regularly have "INR" tests or prothrombin times,

Vibativ may require a pregnancy check if you can become pregnant. You can become pregnant as long as you do not have an ovarian problem, have undergone a tubal or hysterectomy, are in menopause, or haven't had a period for 2 years.

Telavancin has been shown to cause birth defects in animal studies. It is unknown if these effects will occur in humans. Tell your doctor immediately if you fall pregnant.You may find your name on a registry for pregnant women to monitor the effects of telavancin.Ask your doctor if it is safe to breastfeed when using Vibativ. Consult your doctor if you are concerned about any risks.

How to take Vibativ?

Follow the instructions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Read all the instructions on the prescription label.Vibativ can be infused into the vein. Your healthcare provider may give you your first dose and teach you how to use the medication properly.Vibativ can be given every 24 hours, from 7 to 21 consecutive days. The infusion of this medicine can take up to an hour. Do not forget to follow your doctor's instructions.

Before using Vibativ, it must be diluted with a liquid first (diluent) and then in an IV bag. Please read and follow the instructions for use that come with your medicine. If you don't understand the instructions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.Only prepare an injection when you're ready to administer it. If the medicine contains particles, do not use it. For new medication, call your pharmacist.

You will need to have your kidney function checked before, after, and during treatment with Vibativ.Tell your doctor that you are using this medicine. Inform any doctor that you see about your use of this medication.Even if you feel better quickly, continue to take this medication for the entire prescribed time. You can get an infection resistant to the medication if you skip doses. Vibativ does not treat viral infections, such as the flu or common cold.

Keep unused vials inside the refrigerator.You can keep the vial at room temperature for up to 12 hours after mixing the diluent. Then, dilute it further in an IV bag before injecting the mixture. You must dilute the vial further and use it in 7 days if you store it in the refrigerator.The final solution mixed in the IV bag can be frozen for 32 days between temperatures of 14 degrees Fahrenheit and -22 degrees (-10 degrees Celsius and -30 degrees Celsius).

Each vial is only for one-time use. After one use, throw it out, even if the medicine is still inside.Only use a needle or syringe once, and then store them in an "as sharps" container that is puncture-proof. Be sure to follow local or state laws on how to properly dispose of the container. Keep the container out of reach of pets and children.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you miss a dosage, call your doctor to get instructions.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

Avoid this

Antibiotics can cause diarrhea. This could be an indication of a new illness. Call your doctor if you have bloody or watery diarrhea before taking anti-diarrhoea medication.

Side effects of Vibativ

Some side effects can occur during the injection. If you experience tingling or itching or develop a rash after the injection, tell your carer.

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives, rapid heartbeats, difficulty breathing, fainting, or swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat, call 911.

If you experience:

  • Severe stomach pain or diarrhea that is bloody or watery (even months after the last dose);
  • You may experience rapid or pounding pulses, chest fluttering, sudden dizziness, or feel like you are about to pass out.
  • Signs of kidney disease include swelling in the ankles and feet, weight gain, or foamy urine.

Vibativ may cause side effects such as:

  • Foaming urine
  • Nausea, vomiting;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Changes in your sense of taste

Interaction with other drug

Telavancin may cause serious kidney damage or heart problems. You are at greater risk if you use other medications for infection, asthma, high blood pressure, or depression.

Tell your doctor about your other medications, including:

  • A diuretic, or "water pill".
  • Heart rhythm medicine;
  • A blood thinner: Warfarin Coumadin Jantoven
  • Certain heart or blood pressure medicines, such as benazepril (candesartan), captopril (enalapril), lisinopril (lisinopril), olmesartan (telmisartan), losartan, trandolapril, valsartan, and others
  • Nsaids are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. These include aspirin (Advil), ibuprofen, naproxen, indomethacin (Indomethacin), celecoxib (Aleve), diclofenac (Advil), and many others.
