What is Robitussin Multi-Symptom Cold?

Dextromethorphan works by suppressing the cough reflex in your brain. Guaifenesin helps loosen up congestion in both chest and throat areas. Phenylephrine works to shrink blood vessels within nasal passages to make breathing easier. RobitussinMulti-Symptom Cold is an antihistamine used to treat allergies, colds, flu, or other respiratory problems. The cough caused by smoking or asthma will not be treated with Robitussin. This medicine is available in many different brands and forms. This leaflet does not list all brands. This medication guide does not list all possible uses for Robitussin Multi-Symptom Cold.

Side Effects of Robitussin Multi-Symptom Cold

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing, hives or any swelling to your face, lips or throat - seek medical assistance immediately!

This medicine can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Little or no urination
  • Fast or slow heartbeats
  • Confusion, dizziness, feeling unsteady;
  • Nervousness; sleep problems (insomnia);
  • Severe nausea or vomiting;
  • Severe headache; blurred vision; or pounding in the neck and ears
  • Slow breathing
  • Unusual changes in mood or behavior

Robitussin Multi-Symptom Cold side effects may include:

  • Diarrhea, constipation;
  • Dizziness, drowsiness;
  • Sleep problems (insomnia);
  • Feeling nervous, restless, or irritable.

Warnings

This medicine should not be taken if you've recently taken any MAO inhibitor medication such as isocarboxazid (linezolid), phenelzine (phenelzine), rasagiline (selegiline), or tranylcypromine in the last 14 days. These include isocarboxazid, phenelzine and rasagiline as MAOIs.

Before you take this drug

This medicine should not be taken if you have an allergy to either dextromethorphan or phenylephrine. Please refrain from taking this medication within the past 14 days if you have taken an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (linezolid), phenelzine (rasagiline), selegiline (tranylcypromine), or rasagiline. An adverse drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, phenelzine (rasagiline), selegiline and rasagiline as MAO inhibitors.

If you suffer from:

  • High blood pressure, heart disease
  • Diabetes;
  • A thyroid disorder
  • Urination problems
  • Glaucoma;
  • Epilepsy
  • Pheochromocytoma
  • Chronic bronchitis or emphysema can cause a cough that is mucus-laden.

This medication may contain phenylalanine. If you have phenylketonuria, check the label of your medication. Consult your doctor before taking this medication if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

How to take Robitussin Multi-Symptom Cold?

Follow the directions on the label or those prescribed by your physician.Cold and cough medicines should only be taken temporarily until symptoms have subsided. Please read and adhere to all label instructions when administering cough and cold medicines to children, never using these pills to get them sleeping. Do not chew or crush a tablet. Swallow the entire tablet. Measuring liquid medicine is important. Use the provided dosing device or a dose-measuring tool (not a spoon). While taking this medication, be sure to drink extra fluids in order to loosen congestion and soothe your throat. This may help ease symptoms faster.

If your symptoms don't improve within 7 days or you experience a rash or fever, then call your doctor. Notify your doctor or surgeon immediately, if you've taken this medication within the last seven days and if there will be medical testing or surgery required. Store away from moisture or heat at room temperature. Liquid medicines should not be allowed to freeze.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Your cough and cold medication might not fit neatly into a routine schedule - instead you use it only when necessary.If it is almost time for the next dose, skip any missed dose. Never take two doses in one go.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities until you have determined how the medicine will affect you. You may be unable to react properly. Certain side effects can be exacerbated by alcohol consumption. Before using any other cold or cough medicines, ask your doctor or pharmacist if they contain similar ingredients.

Interaction with other drug

Use Robitussin Multi-Symptom Cold only if you are not taking any other medications that can cause drowsiness, such as opioids, muscle relaxers, or medicines for anxiety or seizures. Before using any other medications, such as vitamins and herbs, consult your doctor or pharmacist. This medication guide does not list all possible interactions with other drugs.
