Generic name: Megestrol [meh JESS-trol]

Dosage forms: Oral suspension (40 mg/mL; 625 mg/5 mL); oral tablet (20 mg; 40 mg) are all forms of oral medication used in oral use.

What is Megestrol?

Megestrol can be used to treat wasting and loss of appetite in people with acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Megestrol should not be used to prevent weight gain or wasting syndrome. Megestrol can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Megestrol

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat. If you experience any of the following side effects while taking megestrol or afterward, call your doctor immediately.

  • Chest pain, sudden cough, sneezing, and rapid breathing;

  • The swelling or warmth in the arm or leg is a sign of a rash.

  • Increased thirst, dry mouth, and fruity breath odor.

  • Weight gain (especially around waist and upper back);

  • Feeling tired, muscle weakness, and lightheadedness are all symptoms of fatigue.

  • Skin discoloration and thinning of the skin

  • Menstrual changes and mood changes are all signs of sexual change.

Megestrol side effects may include:

  • Nausea, gas, diarrhea;

  • Increased blood pressure

  • Sexual problems;

  • Rash;

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to megestrol or are pregnant, you should avoid using it.

Inform your physician of any of the following issues:

  • Diabetes;

  • An adrenal gland disorder

  • A stroke or blood clot.

Before starting the treatment, you may need to take a pregnancy test. Avoid using megestrol while pregnant. Prevent pregnancy by using effective birth control. Inform your doctor immediately if you fall pregnant. Megestrol was found to cause low birth weight in animals and other problems during pregnancy. It is unknown if these effects will occur in humans. Consult your doctor to determine your risk. Breastfeeding is not recommended for women with HIV/AIDS.Even if your baby was born without HIV, its transmission can still occur through breast milk.

How to take Megestrol?

Read all instructions or guides that accompany your medication and follow all directions carefully, particularly those on its label. Prior to measuring a dose, always shake orally suspended liquid thoroughly and use either the provided dosing device or another dose-measuring tool (not spoon). Changes in brand, strength or form of medications could alter their dose requirements and vary accordingly. You may need to adjust your dosage if you are sick, stressed, under surgery, or suffering from an infection. Be wary of making any adjustments or dose changes without first consulting with your physician.Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature. You may experience withdrawal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or weakness when you stop taking megestrol. You should ask your doctor about how to stop taking this medication safely.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and wait.Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Contact 1-800-222-1222 immediately in case of poisoning and for immediate medical advice.

What should be avoided?

If your doctor prescribes any restrictions pertaining to food, beverages or activities, follow his/her advice accordingly.
