What is Hypromellose ophthalmic?
Sometimes hydroxypropyl or methylcellulose is called hypromellose.As an eye lubricant, Hypromellose (for the eyes) is used to treat dry, irritated, and swollen eyes.Hypromellose ophthalmic can also be used in certain eye surgery procedures to maintain the shape of an eye and protect the tissues from injury.Hypromellose ophthalmic can also be used to test the drainage of fluid from your eye and protect the cornea.This medication guide does not list all possible uses of hypromellose ophthalmic.
Side effects of Hypromellose and ophthalmic
If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing or swelling of lips, face, tongue or throat. Seek medical assistance immediately.
Hypromellose can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

- Vision changes
- Eyelids that are puffy or droopy
- A lump or swelling on your eyelid

Tell your doctor if glaucoma has ever affected you.Inform your physician if you are pregnant or nursing.Never give hypromellose to a child unless you have consulted a doctor.
How to take Hypromellose ophthalmic?
Read all instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow all directions. Follow the directions on the label.Before using eye medications, wash your hands.Applying eye drops is as simple as tilting your head back and pulling down your lower lid to create a pocket. Squeeze a few drops into the pocket created by holding the dropper over the eye. Close your eyes for a minute or two.Only use the prescribed number of drops.Avoid touching the tip or placing it directly on your eye. If the dropper is contaminated, it can cause serious vision problems.If the medication appears cloudy or has changed color, do not use it.If your symptoms don't improve within 72 hours or worsen, call your doctor.Keep this medication at room temperature. Store at room temperature. When not in use, keep the bottle tightly sealed.In a clinic, the healthcare professional administers hypromellose during an eye examination or eye surgery.
Details on dosage
Usual Adult Dose for Eye Dryness or Redness:
Ophthalmic drops: 1 to 2 drops, as required
The ophthalmic intraocular solution 2% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is used as an aid for anterior segment surgery.
Usual pediatric dose for eye dryness or redness:
Ophthalmic Drops
If you are older than 6 years, 1 or 2 drops may be needed.
Use the ophthalmic intraocular 2% solution as a surgical aid for anterior segment surgery.
What happens if I miss the dose?
You may not have a regular dosing regimen because hypromellose is only used as needed. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip any missed dose. Never take two doses in one go.
What happens if I overdose?
Call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical care, particularly if someone has accidentally swallowed a medication.
What should be avoided?
Use only when wearing soft lenses. The lenses could be permanently stained by the preservative contained in hypromellose. Use the medication at least 15 minutes prior to inserting your contacts.
Interaction with other drug
Other drugs that you take are unlikely to affect the medicine used on your eyes. Many drugs interact with each other. Inform your healthcare provider about the medicines you take, including vitamins and herbal remedies.
