What is Esomeprazole Strontium?
Esomeprazole Strontium can be used to treat the symptoms of gastroesophageal acid reflux (GERD) and conditions that involve excessive stomach acids, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Esomeprazole Strontium can also be used to treat erosive esophagitis, which is damage to the esophagus due to stomach acid.Esomeprazole Strontium can also be used to treat gastric ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection or by the use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs.Esomeprazole Strontium does not provide immediate relief from heartburn symptoms.This medication guide does not list all possible uses of Esomeprazole Strontium.
Side effects of Esomeprazole Strontium
If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergy: difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your lips, face, throat, tongue, or mouth, seek emergency medical attention.
Esomeprazole Strontium can cause severe side effects. If you experience:
- Severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, watery or bleeding;
- Seizure (convulsions);
- Kidney problems: fever; rash; nausea; joint discomfort. Urinating less often than normal, urinating blood, weight gain
- Low magnesium--dizziness, fast or irregular heart rate, tremors (shaking) or jerking muscle movements, feeling jittery, muscle cramps, muscle spasms in your hands and feet, cough or choking feeling; or
- New or worsening lupus symptoms include joint pain and an inflammatory rash that gets worse in the sun.
Long-term use of Esomeprazole Strontium may lead to stomach polyps, also known as fundic glands. Speak to your doctor about the risk.You could become deficient in Vitamin B-12 if you take Esomeprazole Strontium for longer than three years. If you experience this problem, talk to your doctor to find out how best to treat it.
Side effects common to Esomeprazole Strontium include:
- Headache;
- Diarrhea;
- Nausea, stomach pain, gas, constipation, or
dry mouth.

Esomeprazole Strontium may cause kidney damage. If you notice that you are not urinating as much or have blood in the urine, tell your doctor.Diarrhea can be an indication of a recent infection. If you experience diarrhea with blood or water, call your doctor.Esomeprazole Strontium can cause lupus symptoms to worsen or develop. You should tell your doctor about joint pain, a rash that appears on the cheeks and arms when exposed to sunlight, or if your skin becomes more sensitive.It is possible that you are more likely to break a bone if you take Esomeprazole Strontium for a long time or more often than once a day.
Before you take this drug
Heartburn may mimic the early signs of an attack. If you experience chest pain spreading to your shoulder or jaw and feel lightheaded or anxious, you should seek emergency medical attention.
This medicine should be avoided if you:
- You had severe allergies, breathing issues, kidney problems, or other problems after you took Esomeprazole Strontium.
- You are allergic to Esomeprazole or similar medications such as Nexium, Prevacid, and Protonix.
If you've ever:
- Severe liver disease
- Lupus;
- Osteoporosis; or
- Low levels of magnesium are harmful to your health.
Discuss with your doctor how to maintain healthy bones.
Consult your doctor before taking this medication if you're pregnant or nursing.
How to take Esomeprazole Strontium?
Follow the instructions on the packaging or those prescribed by your physician.Each dose should be taken with 8 ounces of water.Esomeprazole should be taken one hour prior to a meal.Do not open, crush, chew, or break the pills.Open the capsule and add the medication to a small amount of applesauce or pudding. The mixture should be swallowed immediately without chewing. Don't save the mixture for future use.Esomeprazole Strontium can be administered through a nasal-gastric feeding tube (NG). Please read and follow all instructions for use that come with the medicine. If you don't understand the instructions, ask your pharmacist or doctor.
Esomeprazole Strontium usually only lasts 4–8 weeks. If you require additional time to heal, your doctor might recommend another course of treatment.Even if you feel better quickly, continue to take Esomeprazole Strontium as prescribed.If your symptoms don't improve or worsen while taking the medicine, call your doctor.Tell your doctor that you are using Esomeprazole Strontium. Inform any physician who treats you about your use of Esomeprazole Strontium.In some cases, antibacterials are used in combination with Esomeprazole-Strontium. All medications should be taken as prescribed.Keep away from heat and moisture at room temperature.
What happens if I miss the dose?
If you are almost due for the next dose, skip the dose that was missed. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

Avoid this
Esomeprazole Strontium Strontium may cause diarrhea. This could be an indication of a fresh infection. Call your doctor if you experience diarrhea that's watery or bleeding.
Interaction with other drug
Inform your doctor of all the medications you are taking. Esomeprazole Strontium can be affected by many drugs, including:
- Cilostazol;
- Clopidogrel;
- Diazepam;
- Digoxin;
- Erlotinib;
- Iron-containing drugs (ferrous fumarate, ironous gluconate, ferrous sulfate, and others);
- Methotrexate;
- Mycophenolate mofetil;
- Rifampin;
- St. John's wort;
- Tacrolimus;
- Warfarin (coumadin, jantoven);
- Antifungal medication—ketoconazole, voriconazole, or
- Hiv/aids medication: atazanavir, nelfinavir, and saquinavir.
