What is Lumateperone?

Adults can be treated with Lumateperone for schizophrenia.Lumateperone can also be used in combination with lithium, valproate, or to treat depressive disorder and bipolar disorders.This medication guide does not list all possible uses for Lumateperone.

Side effects of Lumateperone

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing or facial and throat swelling, seek medical help immediately: hives; difficulty in taking in oxygen; face/lip/throat swelling (which could include itchy red spots); trouble swallowing/breathing etc.Suicidal thoughts can occur in people with mental illness or depression. When first taking depression medication, some young people experience increased suicidal feelings. Be aware of any changes in your mood or symptoms. Families or carers can also be alert to sudden changes in behaviour.Long-term or high doses of lumateperone may cause serious movement disorders that are not always reversible. You are more likely to develop this movement disorder if you have been using lumateperone for a long time, particularly if you're a woman or older.

Lumateperone can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Feeling unsteady or like you could pass out
  • Uncontrolled facial movements (such as lip smacking and frowning; tongue movement or blinking);
  • Tightness in the neck or throat; difficulty swallowing
  • Trouble breathing or speaking
  • A seizure;
  • Dry mouth and fruity breath smell;
  • Low white blood cell count: fever; mouth sores or skin sores; sore neck; cough.
  • Severe nervous system reaction: very stiff (rigid muscles), high fever, excessive sweating, confusion, rapid or uneven heartbeats, tremors, and the feeling that you may pass out.

Lumateperone can cause a number of side effects.

  • Nausea;
  • Dizziness;
  • Sleepiness
  • Dry mouth

Warnings

Lumateperone has not been approved for older adults with dementia or psychosis.Suicidal thoughts can occur in people with mental illness or depression. When first taking depression medication, some young people experience increased suicidal feelings. Should you experience sudden shifts in mood or behavior or are having any thoughts of suicide, consult your physician immediately.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to lumateperone, then it is best not to use it.

Lumateperone is not approved for use in dementia-related psychosis. It may increase the risk that older adults will die.

Tell your doctor about any of the following:

  • Heart problems or a stroke
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Seizures;
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Low white blood cell count
  • High cholesterol (or triglycerides);
  • Diabetes, high blood glucose, or a family background of diabetes or high sugar levels;
  • Liver or kidney disease

Antipsychotic medication taken in the last three months of pregnancy can cause serious problems for the baby. Tell your doctor right away if you get pregnant. Do not stop taking the medicine without consulting your doctor.You may find your name on a registry for pregnant women to track the effects of the lumateperone drug on the child.Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking lumateperone.Lumateperone can affect your fertility (ability to have children), whether you are male or female.

How to take Lumateperone?

Read all instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow all instructions on the label. Follow the directions on the label.Take one capsule a day, with or without food.You may also be required to undergo frequent medical tests and weight control as part of your treatment.Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for schizophrenia:

Take 42 mg once daily.
Use: for the treatment of schizophrenia

Adult dose for bipolar disorder:

Take 42 mg once daily.
Use: as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy in the treatment of bipolar disorder I or II (bipolar depression).

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

Drink enough fluids to avoid becoming dehydrated or overheated during exercise or in hot weather. You should follow your doctor's advice on the amount and type of fluids to drink. Drinking too much liquid is as dangerous as not drinking enough.Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities until you have a better understanding of how lumateperone affects you. Dizziness and drowsiness may cause accidents or serious injuries.

Interaction with other drug

It is sometimes not safe to take certain medications together. Some drugs may affect the blood levels of drugs that you are taking, which can increase side effects and make them less effective.

Inform your doctor of all the medications you are taking. Many drugs can cause lumateperone to be affected, including:

  • Antiviral or antibacterial medicine;
  • Blood pressure medication
  • Bronchodilator asthma medicine
  • Cold or allergy medication (Benadryl et al.)
  • Medicine to treat mental illnesses, such as depression, anxiety, or mood disorders;
  • Medicine to treat overactive urinary bladder
  • Medicine to treat Parkinson’s disease
  • Medicine to treat stomach problems, motion sickness, or irritable bowel syndrome
  • Seizure medicine;
  • John's wort

This list is incomplete, and other drugs can also affect lumateperone. These include prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. This list does not include all possible drug interactions.
