What is MigraTen?

MigraTen is a mixture of caffeine, acetaminophen, and isometheptene. Acetaminophen reduces fever and relieves pain. Caffeine, a stimulant, causes blood vessel narrowing (vasoconstriction). Isometheptene can also cause blood vessel narrowing. It is also important for the treatment of migraines. MigraTen can be used to treat severe headaches, such as migraines and tension headaches. This medication guide does not list all possible uses of MigraTen.

Warnings

You should tell your doctor that you've ever suffered from cirrhosis (alcoholic liver disease) or consumed more than three alcoholic drinks per day. Some medicines containing acetaminophen may be incompatible with yours. MigraTen should not be taken in excess of the recommended dose. Overdosing on acetaminophen may cause liver damage or death. MigraTen should not be used if an MAO-inhibitor such as furazolidone, isocarboxazid, phenelzine, rasagiline, or selegiline (Eldepryl Emsam Zelapar) has been taken in the past 14 days. It is possible that a dangerous drug interaction could lead to severe side effects. Alcohol is not recommended. Acetaminophen may increase your risk of liver injury. Before using any other medication for colds, allergies, pain, or insomnia, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Many combination medications contain acetaminophen, also known as APAP. You can get an overdose of acetaminophen by taking certain medications together. You can check the label of a medication to determine if it contains acetaminophen.

Before you take this drug

MigraTen should be avoided if:

  • Glaucoma;
  • Severe kidney disease
  • Severe liver disease, especially cirrhosis
  • Uncontrolled or severe high blood pressure;
  • Heart disease

Tell your doctor about any other medical conditions you may have to ensure that you are able to safely use MigraTen.

FDA pregnancy category C. MigraTen is FDA pregnancy Category C. You should tell your doctor immediately if you plan to get pregnant or if you are pregnant. This medication may pass through breast milk, which can harm nursing babies. MigraTen should not be used without consulting your doctor first if you plan to breastfeed a child.

How to take MigraTen?

Do not exceed the dosage prescribed by your physician. Take MigraTen according to what it says on your prescription. Follow all instructions closely.MigraTen should not be taken in excess of the recommended dose. Overdosing on acetaminophen may cause liver damage or death.

How do I treat migraine headaches?

  • As soon as headache symptoms appear or an attack begins, take the first MigraTen dose.
  • Take 1 capsule or tablet every hour for relief if your headache doesn't go away.
  • Take no more than 5 capsules or tablets in a 12-hour time period.
  • Call your doctor if you continue to experience migraines after taking 5 capsules or tablets.

MigraTen should be stored at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.

How do I treat tension headaches?

  • As soon as tension headaches begin to occur, take the first MigraTen dose.
  • Take 1 capsule or tablet every 4 hours if your headache doesn't go away.
  • Take no more than 8 capsules or tablets in a 24-hour period for treating a tension headache.
  • Call your doctor if you continue to experience tension headaches after taking 8 capsules or tablets.

Acetaminophen may cause false urine glucose test results. If you are diabetic and notice changes to glucose tests while using MigraTen, talk to your doctor.

What happens if I miss the dose?

MigraTen can be taken whenever you need it, so there is no set schedule. Take the missed dosage as soon as possible if you take this medication regularly.If your next dose is quickly approaching, disregard any missed one as it would only serve to increase doses in order to make up for what might have been taken earlier than planned. Don't try taking more medication in order to make up for what has been missed!

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek emergency medical care. A MigraTen overdose can be deadly.Overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. Other signs are confusion, weakness, or sweating. Other symptoms include dark urine and swelling of the skin, whites of the eyes, or pain in the upper abdomen.

What should be avoided?

Alcohol is harmful to your liver. Avoid drinking alcohol. MigraTen should not be taken with caffeine-containing products such as coffee, tea, energy drinks, diet pills, or any other source of caffeine. These can increase the effects of caffeine. Before taking any other medication for colds, allergies, pain, or insomnia, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Many combination medications contain acetaminophen, sometimes abbreviated APAP. You can get an overdose of acetaminophen by taking certain medications together. You can check the label of a medication to determine if it contains APAP or acetaminophen.

Side effects of MigraTen

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergy to MigraTen, seek emergency medical attention: difficulty breathing; swelling in your mouth, face, lips, or throat; hives.

If you experience a severe side effect, such as:

  • Low fever with stomach pain and nausea;
  • Dark urine and clay-colored stools
  • Jaundice is a condition characterized by yellowing of both the skin and eyes.

Migraten may cause less serious side effects, such as:

  • Dizziness;
  • Mild skin eruptions
  • Sleep problems (insomnia);
  • Feeling nervous, irritable, or jittery.

Interaction with other drug

Other drugs may interact with MigraTen. Inform your doctor of all the medications that you take. Included are prescriptions, vitamins, herbal, and over-the-counter products. Never start taking a new medicine without consulting your doctor.
