What is Hydrochlorothiazide and amiloride?

Hydrochlorothiazide helps prevent the body from absorbing excessive salt. This can lead to fluid accumulation.Amiloride prevents potassium depletion by preventing your body from absorbing too much sodium.Hydrochlorothiazide combined with amiloride can be used to treat fluid accumulation (edema) and hypertension.This medication guide does not list all possible uses of hydrochlorothiazide or amiloride.

Side effects of Hydrochlorothiazide and amiloride

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergy: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in your lips, face, throat, or tongue

Amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide can cause severe side effects. If you experience:

  • A feeling of lightheadedness, as if you could pass out.
  • High sodium: headache; confusion; slurred or slurred speech; hallucinations; nausea. Severe weakness, cramps in the muscles, lack of coordination, unsteadiness, shallow breathing, etc.
  • High potassium: slow pulse; muscle weakness; feeling of tingling

Side effects associated with hydrochlorothiazide or amiloride include:

  • Diarrhea, constipation;
  • Mild stomach pain
  • Tired feeling

Warnings

If you suffer from kidney disease, urination issues, diabetes, or have high potassium levels in your blood, then it is best to avoid using hydrochlorothiazide.You may need to change your treatment plan if you use potassium supplements or certain diuretics (a data-type="auto" href="https://www.drugs.com/drug-class/diuretics.html">spironolactone.html/a>, a data-type="auto" href="https://www.drugs.com/triamterene.html".html.html.html.html.html.html. If you are taking potassium supplements or if your doctor prescribes certain diuretics such as spironolactone and triamterene,Do not take hydrochlorothiazide or amiloride with any medications that contain aliskiren, such as Amturnide, Tekturna, Tekamlo, and Valturna if you are diabetic.

Before you take this drug

This medication should not be used if:

  • If you suffer from kidney disease or are unable to urinate regularly, or you're finding yourself unable to urinate at all, treatment options should be explored immediately.
  • Hyperkalemia (high potassium level)
  • If you take potassium supplements,

Hydrochlorothiazide or amiloride can have unwanted effects. If you are taking potassium supplements or certain diuretics like triamterene and spironolactone, your doctor might need to alter the treatment plan.Do not take hydrochlorothiazide or amiloride if you are diabetic, or any other medication that contains aliskiren, such as Amturnide, Tekturna, Tekamlo, or Valturna.

Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that hydrochlorothiazide or amiloride will be safe for you:

  • High cholesterol, heart disease Coronary artery disease
  • Liver diseases, such as cirrhosis.
  • Glaucoma;
  • A breathing disorder.
  • An allergy is a reaction that occurs when the sulfa drug, or penicillin, is taken.

The unborn child is unlikely to suffer harm from this medication. Inform your doctor immediately if you plan to get pregnant while on treatment or if you are pregnant.The hydrochlorothiazide in breast milk can harm nursing babies. While taking hydrochlorothiazide or amiloride, you should not nurse your baby.

How to take hydrochlorothiazide and amiloride?

Do not take hydrochlorothiazide or amiloride in larger amounts than prescribed. Take hydrochlorothiazide or amiloride only at the recommended dose.Amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide can be taken with meals.You will have to check your blood pressure frequently. If you've been dehydrated or have vomited, your blood and urine will be checked.Tell your doctor if you will need medical testing or surgery. It may be necessary to temporarily stop taking the medication.Even if you're feeling well, you should continue to take your medication if you have high blood pressure. High blood pressure can often be symptomless. Blood pressure medications may be needed for life.Keep away from heat, moisture, and light.Store at room temperature and out of moisture, heat, and light.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for congestive heart failure:

Initial dose: amiloride 5 mg; hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg orally once a day or in divided doses.
Maintenance dose: amiloride 5 to 10 mg; hydrochlorothiazide 50 to 100 mg orally once a day or in divided doses.
Comments:
Doses greater than amiloride 10 mg and hydrochlorothiazide 100 mg per day are usually not needed, and there is no controlled data on such doses.
When used as a single agent, hydrochlorothiazide is administered at doses ranging from 12.5 to 50mg per day.
When combined with antihypertensive drugs, patients usually don't need more than 50 mg of hydrochlorothiazide per day.
Use: Patients with hypertension, congestive heart failure, who develop hypokalemia when using thiazides alone or other kaliuretic diuretics, or those for whom maintaining normal serum potassium is clinically significant (e.g., digitalized patients, patients with significant heart arrhythmias).

Usual Adult Dose for Hypertension:

Initial dose: amiloride 5 mg; hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg orally once a day or in divided doses.
Maintenance dose: amiloride 5 to 10 mg; hydrochlorothiazide 50 to 100 mg orally once a day or in divided doses.
Comments:

What happens if I miss the dose?

As soon as possible, take the missed dose.If your next scheduled dose is approaching quickly, do not take the missed one.You should not take more medicine to compensate for a missed dose.

What should be avoided?

Alcohol can increase the side effects caused by hydrochlorothiazide or amiloride.Use only salt-free or sodium-free milk that does not contain potassium. If you take hydrochlorothiazide or amiloride, these products can cause potassium levels to rise.A diet that is high in sodium can make this medication less effective. This medication can be less effective if you consume too much salt.The medication can affect your ability to think or react. You should be careful when driving or doing anything else that involves being alert.Exercise and hot weather are both ways to avoid becoming dehydrated or overheated. You should follow your doctor's advice on the amount and type of fluids to drink. Drinking too much fluid can sometimes be just as dangerous as not drinking enough.

Interaction with other drug

Inform your doctor of any other medications that cause you to feel lightheaded. (For example, cold medicines, sleeping pills, pain relievers, muscle relaxers, and medicine for anxiety, depression, or seizures.) These medicines can increase the effects of amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide.

Inform your doctor of all medications you take, including those that you stop or start using, during treatment with amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide, in particular:

  • Lithium;
  • Is tacrolimus.
  • Other blood pressure medications
