What is Fomepizole?

Antidotes to poisons include the antidote foamepizole. Fomepizole can be used to treat poisoning with ethylene glycol or methanol. Fomepizole can be used in conjunction with hemodialysis for the removal of poisons. This medication guide does not list all possible uses of fomepizole.

Side effects of Fomepizole

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat.

If you:

  • Skin rashes are characterized by bruising, severe pain, tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness.
  • Severe nausea or dizziness
  • Lightheadedness may occur, making you feel as if they could pass out at any moment.

Some of the common side effects associated with fomepizole include:

  • Headache;
  • Dizziness, drowsiness;
  • Nausea;
  • You may experience a metallic or unpleasant taste in your mouth.

Warnings

Before you take this drug

Tell your doctor, if possible, before receiving fomepizole if you:

  • An allergic reaction to any medication;
  • If you have kidney disease or are unable to urinate on your own, seek medical assistance immediately.
  • If you have recently consumed alcohol,

FDA pregnancy class C There is no information on whether fomepizole can harm an unborn child. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant. Fomepizole is not known to pass into breast milk or if it can harm a baby who is nursing. Inform your doctor if your baby is breastfed. It may not be possible to inform your caregivers that you are breastfeeding or pregnant in an emergency before fomepizole is administered. Ensure that any doctor who is caring for you or your baby knows about the medicine.

How to take Fomepizole?

Fomepizole can be injected through an IV into a vein. This injection will be given by a healthcare provider. As part of your treatment, you may receive other medications and IV fluids. You will be closely monitored for your breathing, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, as well as your kidney function. During treatment, your blood and urine levels will be monitored frequently. Your heart function might also be assessed using an ECG or electrocardiograph (also known as an EKG). The poisoning will be monitored for other symptoms, including problems with breathing, vision, or urination.
