What is Ferric pyrophosphate?

Ferric pyrophosphate can be used as a substitute for iron. Iron is normally obtained from food. Iron is essential for the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to your tissues and organs. Ferric pyrophosphate can be used to treat iron deficiencies in patients with chronic renal disease on dialysis. This medication guide does not list all possible uses of ferric pyrophosphate.

Side Effects of Ferric pyrophosphate

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, feeling lightheaded, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat.

The side effects of ferric pyrophosphate can be serious. If you experience:

  • Bleeding around the dialysis access point

  • You can see purple veins through your blue skin.

  • You may experience swelling of your fingers, arms, or legs.

  • Blood in the sputum or unusual bleeding

  • A feeling of lightheadedness, as if you could pass out.

  • Fever;

  • You may experience pain or burning after urinating.

Side effects of ferric pyrophosphate include:

  • Headache, dizziness;

  • You may experience swelling in your hands or feet.

  • Weakness, tiredness;

  • Muscle pain;

  • Feeling short of breath

  • Back, arm, and leg pain can be a sign of a serious condition.

Before you take this drug

Ferric pyrophosphate should not be used if you've ever experienced a severe reaction to an iron-containing product.

Please notify your physician of the following:

  • Liver disease

  • High blood pressure.

Use birth control while taking this medication and for 2 weeks following your last dose. As breast-feeding may no longer be possible while taking this medicine, breastfeeding might not be possible either. You should consult your doctor if you are concerned about any risks.

How to take Ferric pyrophosphate?

You will be tested by your doctor to ensure that you are not suffering from any conditions that would make it unsafe for you to use ferric pyrophosphate. The dialyzer fluid is infused with ferric pyrophosphate during hemodialysis. Your condition will be closely monitored to ensure that you don't have an allergy reaction. This injection will be administered by a healthcare provider. Ferric pyrophosphate should not be used with home hemodialysis. Medical tests will be required frequently.

Details on dosage

Usual Adult Dose for Hemodialysis:

To achieve a final hemodialysate with a concentration of iron III equal to 2 micromolars (110 mcg/L), add bicarbonate concentrate.

Comments:

This drug is not meant to be used in percutaneous dialysis.

This drug has not yet been tested in home hemodialysis.

Use: Iron supplements should be utilized as part of an overall approach for maintaining hemoglobin in individuals living with HDD-CKD (hemodialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease).

Adult dose for iron deficiency:

What happens if I miss the dose?

You are unlikely to miss a dosage because you receive ferric-pyrophosphate along with your hemodialysis.
