What is Duration?

Oxymetazoline shrinks the blood vessels of the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause congestion in the nasal passages. Duration (for the nose) is a temporary treatment for nasal congestion (stuffy nose) caused by allergies or the common cold. This medication guide does not list all possible uses for Duration.

Side effects of Duration

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat.

Duration can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Symptoms that persist or worsen;
  • After using nasal spray, you may experience severe stinging or burning in your nose.
  • Chest pain, rapid or uneven heartbeat;
  • Anxiety, confusion, or a severe headache can all be symptoms of anxiety.

Some of the common side effects that duration can cause include:

  • A mild burning or stinging in the nose
  • Sneezing;
  • Runny nose

Warnings

Duration (for the nose) provides temporary relief from nasal congestion due to allergies or the common cold. If you experience severe nasal burning or stinging after using the nasal aerosol, stop using Duration immediately and contact your doctor.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to Duration, it is best not to use it.

If you have other medical conditions or concerns, make sure that before taking medication it's okay with both your physician and pharmacist.

  • A thyroid disorder
  • Urination or prostate problems

FDA pregnancy class C There is no information on whether duration can harm an unborn child. If you plan to get pregnant or are already pregnant, tell your doctor. There is no way to know if oxymetazoline nasal can pass into breast milk or if it will harm a baby who is nursing. You should tell your doctor if you're breastfeeding a child.

How to take Duration?

Do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration. Use the recommended dose and do not exceed it. If you use the medication for too long or too frequently, it may cause your nasal congestion to improve and then return. If your symptoms persist after three days of treatment, call your doctor. This medication should not be shared with anyone else, even if the other person has similar symptoms. Shared nasal spray bottles can spread an infection.

Use the nasal solution (nose drops):

  • Blow your nose softly. Lean your head as far back as you can or hang your head from the bed. Place the correct number of drops in your nose by holding the dropper above your nose.
  • Sit up, bend your head forward slightly, and then gently move it left and right. For a few moments, keep your head bowed forward while seated.
  • After using the nasal drops, avoid sneezing and blowing your nose.

How to use nasal spray

  • Blow your nose softly. Insert the bottle tip into one nostril while keeping your head up. Close the other nostril with your finger. Inhale quickly and spray the medicine gently into your nose. Use the spray on your other nostril.
  • After using nasal spray, do not blow your nose.

Use the nasal spray no more than twice in 24 hours. Do not use soap or water to wash the spray bottle tip. Store away from moisture or heat at room temperature. Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep bottle tightly sealed when not being used.

What happens if I miss the dose?

As soon as you remember a missed dose, take it immediately. If your next scheduled dosage is approaching quickly, however, skip any missed ones altogether; and never double up medication in an effort to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose?

Should anyone mistakenly consume medication, seek emergency medical help immediately or call Poison Help immediately at 1-800-222-1222. Keep Duration away from children. Certain nasal medications may cause serious medical issues in young children who accidentally swallow or suck on the medicine.

What should be avoided?

If your physician recommends any restrictions when it comes to food, beverages or activities, be sure to heed his or her recommendations.

Interaction with other drug

If you also use any of these drugs, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether it is safe to use Duration.

  • An antidepressant--amitriptyline, clomipramine, desipramine, doxepin, imipramine, nortriptyline;
  • Ergot medicine: ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, ergonovine, and methylergonovine;
  • An mao inhibitor—isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.

Other drugs can interact with duration. Inform your doctor of all the medications you take. Included are prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal products. Never start a new medicine without consulting your doctor.
