Generic name: diphenhydramine and magnesium salicylate [DYE-fen-HYE-dra-meen-and-mag-NEE-ze-um-sa-LIS-a-late]

What is Doans PM?

Diphenhydramine can be used to treat allergies and as a sleeping aid. Magnesium salicylate belongs to a class of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) called the salicylates. Doans PM, a combination of medicines used for treating back pain that keeps you awake when sleeping, is not recommended. Doans PM can be used in other ways not mentioned in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Doans PM

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergy reaction, seek immediate medical attention: Hives, wheezing or difficulty breathing, feeling dizzy, swelling in your mouth, face, lips, throat, or tongue

Doan PM can cause severe side effects. Doan PM should be stopped immediately, and you need to consult your doctor if:

  • Severe sleepiness
  • Urination that is painful or difficult
  • Hearing Loss
  • Confusion;
  • Signs of bleeding in the stomach include feeling lightheaded, stomach pain that persists, bloody or black stools, and vomit or blood that looks like ground coffee.

Doans PM can cause the following side effects:

  • Drowsiness;
  • Dry eyes and blurred vision
  • Dry mouth, throat, nose, or nostril
  • Reduced urination
  • Heartburn, nausea, vomiting, gas;
  • constipation;
  • Feeling restless or even excited.
  • After nighttime usage, drowsiness during the day or a "hangover" sensation may occur.

Warnings

Follow the instructions on how to use this medication. Too much diphenhydramine may cause serious heart conditions, seizures, coma, or even death. Magnesium salicylate can cause fatal stomach and intestinal bleeding. Before giving this medicine to children younger than 12, consult a physician. Never give this medication to children or teens with flu symptoms or chickenpox.

Before you take this drug

Doans PM should not be used if the user is allergic to salicylates or aspirin. This medicine should not be given to children or teens with flu or chickenpox symptoms. Salicylates may cause Reye’s syndrome in children. This is a potentially fatal and serious condition. You may not be aware of the possibility that you will experience stomach or intestinal bleeding while taking magnesium salicylate.This statement applies especially to seniors.

If you've ever:

  • Bleeding problems;
  • Heartburn or bleeding in the stomach;
  • Urination or prostate problems
  • If you suffer from asthma, copd, or have a cough related to mucus build-up from smoking or chronic lung disease then this could be the source of your discomfort.
  • Heart disease, high blood pressure
  • Liver disease, or cirrhosis;
  • Kidney disease
  • Arthritis, gout;
  • Diabetes;
  • Glaucoma;
  • A thyroid condition.

Consult your doctor before taking this medication if you're pregnant or nursing. This medicine should not be taken during the final 20 weeks of pregnancy. It may result in serious kidney damage in an unborn child or severe bleeding during birth.

How to take Doan PM?

Follow the instructions on the packaging or those prescribed by your physician. Too much diphenhydramine may cause serious heart issues, seizures, coma, or even death. This medicine should be taken with water. If this medication upsets your stomach, take it with food. This medicine should not be used to put a child to sleep. If your pain doesn't improve or gets worse within 10 days, stop taking the medicine. Call your doctor. Inform your doctor of any swelling or redness, as well as a prolonged fever. Tell your dentist or surgeon that you use Doans PM before you undergo any dental or surgical work. It may be necessary to temporarily stop taking the medication. Doan PM can produce unusual medical test results. Doan PM should be disclosed to any physician whom you consult. Keep away from heat and moisture. Store at room temperature.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Doans PM can be used as needed, and there is no set schedule. If it is almost time to take your next dose, skip any missed doses. Never take two doses in one go.

What happens if I overdose?

Call Poison Help immediately on 1-800-222-1222 if consuming too much Diphenhydramine; an overdose could prove deadly! The symptoms of an overdose may include nausea, vomiting, severe drowsiness or confusion, dry mouth and eyes, dilation, rapid heartbeat, shaking, anxiety, hallucinations, or seizures.

What should be avoided?

Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities until you have determined how Doan PM affects you. You may be unable to react properly. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are using other medicines that contain magnesium salicylate or diphenhydramine (such as aspirin). Included are medicines used for fever, pain, swelling, sleeping, allergy symptoms, or cold or allergy symptom relief. Too much diphenhydramine may result in an accidental overdose. Avoid alcohol. Avoid alcohol.

Interaction with other drug

Before taking this medication with other medications that may cause drowsiness, such as sleep medicines, opioids, muscle relaxants, anxiety and seizure medicine, or sleeping pills, consult your doctor.

If you also use:

  • A blood thinner—warfarin, Coumadin, or Jantoven
  • Other NSAIDs are available, including aspirin (Advil), ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, and Indomethacin.
