What is Desmopressin?

Desmopressin can be used to treat nighttime incontinence, central diabetic insipidus, and increased thirst or urination due to head surgery or trauma. Desmopressin, a synthetic form of the hormone that is naturally produced in the pituitary and controls how the body uses its water, is manufactured by humans. This medication guide does not list all possible uses of desmopressin.

Side effects of Desmopressin

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing, hives or swelling to face lips throat (also referred to as facial, lips or throat swelling) as soon as possible seek medical advice and immediate assistance

Desmopressin may cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Low sodium levels in the body can cause headaches, confusion, hallucinations, and severe weakness.
  • Flushing (a sudden feeling of warmth, redness, or tingling sensation);
  • Weight gain or swelling;
  • A seizure;
  • Weak or shallow breathing
    A feeling of lightheadedness, as if you could pass out.

In older adults, serious side effects are more likely to occur.

Desmopressin can cause the following side effects:

  • Headache;
  • Dizziness;
  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea;
  • Mild stomach pain

Warnings

If you suffer from severe kidney disease or hyponatremia (low sodium levels), then desmopressin is not recommended. You should also avoid taking Nocdurna in the event that you suffer from severe thirst, uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, or high levels of a hormonal substance that causes water retention. While using desmopressin, limit your water intake and other fluids. Too much water can cause a life-threatening electrolyte imbalance. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately: headaches, confusion, cramps in muscles, severe weakness, and nausea, as well as feeling unsteady or restless.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to desmopressin or

  • Severe kidney disease
  • Hyponatremia is a condition where your body has low sodium levels.

You should also not take Nocdurna sublingual desmopressin if you:

  • A disease or psychologic condition that produces extreme or unusual thirst
  • Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormonal secretion
  • High blood pressure:
  • Heart failure;
  • If you use a steroid (oral, nasal, or inhaled) or a diuretic (water pill), or if your doctor has prescribed one, tell them.

Desmopressin has not been approved for the treatment of bedwetting in children younger than six years. Nocdurna cannot be used by anyone under the age of 18. Never give desmopressin without consulting a doctor.

Notify your doctor of any of the following conditions:

  • An electrolyte imbalance;
  • Unusual thirst
  • Fluid retention;
  • Congestive heart disease.
  • High blood pressure
  • Urination problems
  • Kidney disease
  • Cystic fibrosis.

Notify your doctor immediately if you become pregnant or breastfeeding.

How to take Desmopressin?

Desmopressin can be used safely if you don't have any conditions. Your doctor will perform blood tests. Read all instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow all directions. Follow the directions on the label. While using desmopressin, limit your water intake and other fluids. Too much water can cause a life-threatening electrolyte imbalance. Children and older adults who use desmopressin should be especially careful about fluid intake. You should follow your doctor's advice about how much liquid you can drink. Wait at least 12 hours from the last dose of nasal spray before taking your first tablet if you switched from desmopressin to tablets. Take a sublingual tablet one hour before going to bed. Just place the tablet under your tongue, let it dissolve slowly, and wait.Before going to sleep, empty your bladder. You may require frequent blood tests to check your blood pressure. Store away from moisture, heat and light at room temperature for best results. Keep Nocdurna in the original foil blister package. Only remove a tablet when you're ready to use it.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If it is almost time for your next dose, take note that any missed ones should not be consumed.Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 if you suspect poison, or seek immediate medical advice. The symptoms of an overdose may include headaches, confusion, drowsiness, or rapid weight gain.

What should be avoided?

Avoid drinking anything 1 hour prior to your dose of desmopressin. You should not drink anything for at least eight hours after taking the medication. Avoid caffeine-containing beverages such as coffee, teas, colas, energy drinks, or any other source of caffeine prior to going to bed. Avoid drinking alcohol directly before going to sleep. This could result in poor rest.

Interaction with other drug

Inform your physician of any medications you are currently taking.Desmopressin can be affected by many drugs, including:

  • Antidepressants are a type of medication.
  • Opioid pain medication
  • Seizure medication;
  • Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Diclofenac, and Indomethacin are all nsaids.
