What is Austedo XR?

Austedo XR is prescribed to adult patients to control involuntary muscle movements (chorea) due to Huntington's disease. It is not an effective treatment for Huntington's disease and is not able to treat other symptoms associated with this condition.Austedo XR is also utilised for adults to treat the signs associated with tardive dyskinesia, which is a nervous system disorder. Tardive dyskinesia is characterised by repetitive and uncontrolled muscle movements, mostly in the facial area (chewing, lipsmacking, chewing, frowning, tongue movements, blinking, or eye movements).Austedo XR is not a permanent treatment for disorders of movement that are involuntary.Austedo XR can also be used for other purposes that are not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Austedo XR

Contact a medical professional immediately. If you are experiencing symptoms that indicate an allergic reaction, such as symptoms of hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your lips, face, and tongue,Some people are contemplating suicide when taking Austedo XR. Keep attentive to any changes in your mood or signs. Family members or carers are also advised to be on the lookout for abrupt changes in your behaviour.Certain side effects could be indicators that Huntington's disease is advancing. Your doctor should monitor your progress regularly.

Austedo XR may cause serious side effects. Consult your physician immediately if you suffer from:

  • Heartbeats that are fast or rapid, high-pitched chest movements, shortness of breath, and suddenly feeling dizzy (like you're about to pass out);
  • Extreme anxiety or excessive agitation;
  • Tremors, shaking;
  • Stiffness in the muscles;
  • Difficulties with balance and coordination issues;
  • Nervous system reactions that are severe include very rigid (rigid) muscles with extremely high temperatures, sweating and confusion, rapid or irregular heartbeats, and tremors as if you're about to faint.

Common negative results of Austedo XR can include:

  • Drowsiness;

Prior to using this drug

It is not recommended to take Austedo XR if you are allergic to it or are suffering from:

  • Untreated or untreated depression that is not treated or controlled

  • If you've recently used tetrabenazine and valbenazine,
  • Liver disease.

Don't use austedo xr if you have used the drug reserpine within the last 20 days or if you've taken an mao inhibitor within the last 14 days. Risky interactions between drugs can occur. Mao inhibitors include isocarboxazid linezolid, methylene blue injection phenelzine, and tranylcypromine.

  • Liver disease.

People suffering from Huntington's disease could be at a greater risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviours. A treatment like Austedo XR could raise the risk. However, the advantages of using Austedo XR (improvement in daily life) could outweigh any suicide dangers.The use of Austedo XR may cause symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease (resting tremor, stiff muscles, sluggish movements, trouble keeping your balance as well as walking). Talk to your doctor about the risk.Your doctor should monitor your improvement frequently. Family members or carers are also required to be on the lookout for any sudden change in the way you behave.Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or pregnant.

How do I take Austedo XR?

Follow the instructions on the label of your prescription and study all medication guides or instructions sheets. Your doctor may alter your dosage. Follow the medication precisely as directed.If you're switching to another similar medication called tetrabenazine, you should take the first dosage of deutetrabenazine the day following the last dose of tetrabenazine.Austedo XR is usually taken one or two times a day, with or without food and an entire glass of water.Suck the tablet completely, and don't crush, chew, or tear it. Inform your doctor if you are having difficulty swallowing the tablet in its entirety.There may be medical tests to assess your heart's function by using an electrocardiograph, or ECG (sometimes known as the EKG).Stop taking the medicine without consulting your doctor. If you stop taking Austedo XR for longer than one week, don't take it back without the advice of your doctor.Keep it at room temperature, free of heat and moisture. Store the medicine in its original container, along with the container or package of preservative that absorbs moisture.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Do not take the medicine for as long as you can. However, avoid your missed dosage if you are close to the time of the next dose. Don't take two doses at a time.

What happens if I overdose?

Get medical attention in an emergency or contact the poison help line at 1-800-222-1222.The symptoms of an overdose can include muscle involuntary movements, tremors, fast eyes, nausea, vomiting, sweating, diarrhoea, excessive drowsiness, disorientation, hallucinations, or feeling lightheaded.

Aviod this

Avoid driving and other hazardous activities until you understand the extent to which Austedo XR affects you. Drowsiness, dizziness, or confusion can cause accidents, falls, or serious injuries.Consuming alcohol while taking this medication may cause unwanted side effects.

Interaction with other drug

Austedo XR may cause serious heart issues. The risk is more likely if you take various other medications for asthma, infections, heart conditions, high blood pressure, depression, cancer, mental illness, malaria, or HIV.Utilising Austedo XR with other drugs that cause you to feel drowsy could cause more of this. Consult your physician before taking opioids, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, medication for anxiety, or seizures.A variety of drugs can influence Austedo XR. This includes prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal products. The interactions between these products are not included in this list.
