What is Sildenafil (injection)?
Sildenafil is a relaxing agent that relaxes the muscles of blood vessels. It also boosts blood flow to certain parts of the body.Sildenafil injection (Revatio) is used to treat hypertension of the pulmonary artery and to improve the exercise capacity of both genders.
Another form of sildenafil has been identified as Viagra. It serves to manage erectile dysfunction (impotence) in males. Revatio can be used to treat the symptoms of PAH in both females and males.Avoid using sildenafil injections when you are taking Viagra or other medications for erectile dysfunction unless your doctor advises you to.Sildenafil injections can be used for other purposes that are not mentioned in this guide.
Side effects of Sildenafil (injection)
Seek medical attention immediately in the event that you exhibit symptoms that indicate an allergy, such as symptoms of hives, breathing difficulties, and swelling of your lips, face, and tongue.
Stop taking sildenafil and seek medical attention immediately. If you suffer from:
- Heart attack symptoms: chest pressure or pain that spreads into your shoulder or jaw; nausea; sweating;
- Vision changes or sudden vision loss;
- Erections are painful or last for more than four hours (prolonged erections may cause damage to the penis).
Sildenafil may cause serious side effects. Consult your physician immediately in the event of:
- Hearing loss, or sudden deafness;
- Unsteady heartbeat;
- Swelling in your ankles, hands, or feet;
- Breath shortness
- Lightheadedness can leave one feeling like they might pass out and lose consciousness.
Common negative side effects of sildenafil could include:
- Nosebleed;
- Headache;
- Upset stomach;
- Flushing (warmth of redness or tingling sensation);
- Sleep problems (insomnia);
- Nasal stuffiness or runny nose.

Avoid using sildenafil injections if you're taking a nitrate medicine to treat the chest or for heart issues. This includes nitroglycerin isosorbide, dinitrate, and mononitrate isosorbide. Nitrates can also be found in recreational drugs like amyl nitrate or nitrite ("poppers"). Sildenafil taken with a nitrate medication can result in an abrupt and significant drop in blood pressure.
To ensure that sildenafil is suitable for you, inform your doctor if you ever experience:
- Heart disease and heart rhythm issues, angina (chest pain), coronary artery disease, and circulation issues
- A condition referred to as pulmonary veno-occlusive disease.
- A cardiac attack or stroke, or congestive heart failure;
- Blood pressure, blood pressure, high blood pressure, or
- Kidney or liver disease;
- Blood cell disorders include sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma or leukemia;
- A hemorrhagic disorder like hemophilia;
- A stomach ulcer;
- Retina pigmentosa (an acquired eye condition) or an inherited condition that causes loss of vision;
- An actual deformity in the penis (such as the condition known as Peyronie's disease).
Sildenafil could reduce blood flow to the optic nerve in the eye, which can cause rapid loss of vision. It has happened to a small percentage of those taking sildenafil. The majority of them had cardiovascular disease, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or other pre-existing eye issues, and also included people who smoke or are older than 50. It isn't clear if sildenafil is actually the reason for the loss of vision.
The medicine is not intended to harm the unborn baby. Consult your physician if you are expecting or planning to be pregnant.It isn't known if sildenafil is absorbed into breast milk or whether it is harmful to nursing babies. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding a child.Avoid giving this medicine to anyone who is less than 18 years of age without medical guidance.
How to take Sildenafil injection?
The medication is injected into veins via an IV. You can be instructed on how to administer an IV at home. Don't inject yourself with sildenafil when you don't know how to administer the injection, and dispose of the IV tubing, needles that are no longer in use, and other equipment for injecting the medicine.
Sildenafil injections are typically given three times a day. Follow the instructions on the prescription label. Do not take this medicine in smaller or larger quantities or for longer periods than prescribed.Take your dose only when you are prepared to inject. Avoid using any medicine that changes color or has particles. Contact your pharmacist to inquire about the latest medication.
Use a needle that is disposable only once, and then dispose of it in a container that is puncture-proof (ask your pharmacist for one and how you can get rid of it). Keep the container away from the reach of pets and children.
Ingestion, diarrhea, or sweating excessively can result in dehydration. These conditions could lead to lower blood pressure. Consult your physician if you are suffering from an illness that causes vomiting or diarrhea.Keep it at room temperature, free of heat and moisture.

Usual Adult Dose for Erectile Dysfunction:
Initial dose: 50 mg taken orally daily, if necessary, 1 hour prior to sexual activity.
Maintenance The dosage range is between 25 and 100 mg, taken orally every day or as needed 1 hour prior to sexual activity.
Comments: This drug can be used anywhere between thirty minutes and four hours prior to sexual activities.

Usual Adult Dose for Pulmonary Hypertension:
Revatio (R):
Oral:
Initial dose: 5 to 20 mg taken orally three times per day, between 4 and 6 hours between each
The maximum dose is 20 mg per day, taken orally three times.
Injection:
Initial dosage: 2.5 or 10 mg IV bolus 3 times a day.
Comments:
There was no improvement in efficacy when oral doses were greater than the dose recommended for maximum effectiveness.
A dose of 10 mg is expected to produce the same pharmacological effects as a 20 mg dose taken orally.
Use: Treatment for PPH (WHO Group I) in adults to increase the ability to exercise and slow down the progression of clinical symptoms.
Usual Geriatric Dose for Erectile Dysfunction:
Initial dose: 25 mg taken orally at least once per day, an hour prior to any sexual activity.

What happens if I miss the dose?
Utilize the dose missed immediately after your recall. Avoid your missed dosage if it's nearing the time for the next dose. Do not take extra medication to make up for the missed dose.

What should be avoided?
Don't use other medications to treat impotence unless you have the advice of your physician.
Interaction with other drugs
Do not take Revatio together with Viagra or similar medicines like avanafil (Stendra), tadalafil (Cialis), or Vardenafil (Levitra). Inform your doctor of the medications you take to treat erectile dysfunction.
Discuss with your physician your current medications and those you are about to stop or start taking, including:
- Medications used to manage high blood pressure and prostate problems;
- An antibiotic—clarithromycin, erythromycin, or telithromycin;
- Antifungal medicine—ketoconazole or itraconazole;
- Medicine to treat HIV/AIDS—atazanavir, indinavir, ritonavir, or saquinavir.
