What is Ruconest?

Ruconest, a synthetic form of c1 esterase-inhibiting protein, occurs naturally in the bloodstream. It helps to control swelling. This protein is not present in enough people with hereditary angioedema. Hereditary angioedema is characterized by swelling attacks and other symptoms, such as stomach pain or difficulty breathing. Ruconest, an injectable medicine, is used to treat acute angioedema in adults and adolescents with hereditary angioedema. The Ruconest can be used by adults and children over the age of 13.

Warnings

If you have an allergy to rabbits or products made from rabbits (meats, furs, and pelts), then Ruconest is not for you. If you've had a life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction, such as anaphylaxis, to this medication or any other C1 estrase inhibitor, then you should not take Ruconest.

Before you take this drug

Ruconest should not be used if you have an allergy to a C1 estrase inhibitor or:

  • If you have an allergy to rabbits, rabbit products, or their fur or pelt; or
  • If you've ever experienced a severe allergic reaction (such as Berinert or Cinryze) to Ruconest,

Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that Ruconest will be safe for you:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • A history of strokes or blood clots.

It is not anticipated that this medicine will harm a baby in utero. Inform your doctor if you are or plan to be pregnant. It is unknown if c1 estrase inhibitors pass into breast milk or if they could harm a baby who is nursing. You should tell your doctor if you're breastfeeding a child. Ruconest should not be used by anyone under the age of 13.

How to take Ruconest?

Follow the directions on your prescription label. Please follow all the instructions on the prescription label. Use this medication only as directed.Do not exceed the prescribed dosage or use it for longer than directed. Ruconest can be injected through an IV. It is possible that you will be taught how to use the IV at home. You should not inject this medicine yourself if you don't know how to properly give the injection or dispose of used needles and IV tubing. Ruconest comes as a powder that needs to be diluted with liquid before use. You should know how to mix and store your medicine if you use it at home. You can ask your pharmacist which diluents are safe to mix with the powdered medicine. Before mixing your medicine or preparing an injection, wash your hands. You should read all the information provided, including medication guides and instructions. If you have questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Store Ruconest in the fridge and use it within 8 hours. Do not freeze. If you store it at room temperature, the mixed medicine can be used immediately.The weight is used to calculate c1 esterase inhibition doses. Ruconest powder may be required in two vials to prepare a single dosage. Follow all instructions for mixing your medicine. This medicine comes in a single-use bottle (vial). Even if some medicine is left after injection, throw it away after use. The IV infusion must take approximately 5 minutes. Ruconest can be used to treat angioedema attacks with a single dose. If your symptoms don't improve after one dose, you may need a second. The unmixed powder should be stored in the refrigerator or in an area that is dark and cool. Do not freeze the medication. Keep it away from the light. After the date of expiration printed on the label, throw away any vials that are still unused.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Ruconest does not require a schedule of daily doses because it is only used as needed. If your symptoms don't improve after taking this medication, call your doctor immediately.

What should be avoided?

If your doctor prescribes any restrictions regarding food, beverage, or activity, follow their instructions.

Side effects of Ruconest

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction: rash, hives, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, blue lips or gums, fast heartbeats, feeling as if you may pass out, swelling of your face or lips, or of your tongue or throat, seek emergency medical attention.

If you experience:

  • A sudden feeling of numbness or weakness on one side
  • Sudden severe headache; slurred or slurred-up speech, vision or balance problems,
  • Pain, swelling, warmth, or redness on one or both legs

Some of the most common side effects associated with Ruconest include:

  • Headache;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Nausea.

Interaction with other drug
