What is Moduretic 5-50?
Hydrochlorothiazide helps prevent the body from absorbing excessive salt. This can lead to fluid accumulation.
Amiloride, a diuretic and potassium-sparing agent, also helps to prevent your body from taking in too much sodium. It keeps potassium levels at optimum levels.
Combining hydrochlorothiazide with amiloride can be used to treat fluid accumulation (edema) and hypertension.

Side effects of Moduretic 5-50
If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergy: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in your lips, face, throat, or tongue.
The side effects of Moduretic can be serious. If you experience:
- Feeling lightheadedness as though they might pass out.
- High sodium: headache; confusion; slurred or distorted speech; hallucinations; and vomiting. Severe weakness, cramps in the muscles, lack of coordination, unsteadiness, and shallow breathing.
- High potassium: slow pulse; muscle weakness; tingly sensation.
Moduretic 5-50 can cause the following side effects:
- Diarrhea, constipation;
- Mild stomach pain
- Tired feeling

Moduretic 5–50 should be avoided if you suffer from kidney disease, urinary problems, diabetes, or have high potassium levels in your blood.
Diuretics can have unwanted and dangerous side effects. If you are taking potassium supplements or using certain diuretics like triamterene and spironolactone, your doctor might need to alter the treatment plan.
Moduretic 5-50 should not be used with any medications that contain aliskiren.
Before you take this drug
This medication should not be used if:
- If you suffer from kidney disease or are unable to urinate on your own, these could be symptoms.
- Hyperkalemia (high potassium level)
- If you take potassium supplements,.

Moduretic 5-50 should not be used with any medications that contain aliskiren, such as Amturnide, Tekturna, Tekamlo, or Valturna.
Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that Moduretic 5-50 will be safe for you:
- High cholesterol, heart disease Coronary artery disease
- Cirrhosis and other liver diseases
- Glaucoma;
- A breathing disorder;
- Gout;
- An allergy to penicillin or sulfa drugs.
The unborn child is unlikely to suffer harm from this medication. Inform your doctor immediately if you plan to get pregnant while on treatment or if you are pregnant.
The hydrochlorothiazide in breast milk can harm nursing babies. While taking hydrochlorothiazide or amiloride, you should not nurse your baby.
How to take Moduretic 5-50?
Do not take Moduretic 5-50 in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended on the prescription. Moduretic 5-50 should not be taken in higher or lower doses or for more time than prescribed.
Moduretic 5–50 can be taken with your food.
You will have to check your blood pressure frequently. If you've been dehydrated or have vomited, your blood and urine will be checked.
Be sure to inform your physician if any medical testing or surgery will be needed, including temporary suspension of medications.
Even when feeling fine, taking blood pressure medication remains important if you suffer from high blood pressure. High blood pressure often presents itself without symptoms; medication could therefore remain necessary over time.
Keep away from heat, moisture and light to store at room temperature without moisture damage, heat or light exposure.
What happens if I miss the dose?
As soon as possible, take the missed dose. If your next dose is imminent, skip any missed ones. You should not take more medicine to compensate for a missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Call 1-800-222-1222 immediately if you suspect poison ingestion and seek emergency medical assistance.
What should be avoided?
Alcohol can increase the side effects caused by hydrochlorothiazide or amiloride.
Use only salt-free or sodium-free milk that does not contain potassium. You could get too much potassium if you use these products while taking Moduretic 5–50.
A diet that is high in sodium can make this medication less effective. This medication can be less effective if you consume too much salt.
The medication can affect your ability to think or react. You should be careful when driving or doing anything else that requires alertness.
Exercise and hot weather are both ways to avoid becoming dehydrated or overheated. You should follow your doctor's advice on the amount and type of fluids to drink. Drinking too much fluid can sometimes be just as dangerous as not drinking enough.
Interaction with other drug
Inform your doctor of any other medications that cause you to feel lightheaded. (For example, cold medicines, sleeping pills, pain relievers, narcotics, muscle relaxers, and medicine for depression, anxiety, or seizures.) These medicines can increase the effects of amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide.
Moduretic 5-50 is a medication that should be used with caution.
