What is Minoxidil Topical?

Use Minoxidil to regrow your hair. The use of minoxidil topically will not result in permanent hair growth. Continue using this product to maintain the growth of your scalp hair. This medication guide does not list all possible uses for Minoxidil Topical.

Side effects of Minoxidil Topical

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic response, seek immediate medical attention: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in your lips, face, throat, or tongue. The risk of side effects when applying minoxidil to your skin is very low. However, if you allow the medication to enter your bloodstream, side effects may occur.

The topical application of minoxidil can have serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Severe scalp irritation
  • Unwanted growth of facial hair
  • Chest pain, fast heartbeats;
  • Rapid weight gain; swelling of the hands and feet;
  • Feeling lightheadedness as though you could faint.
  • Headache, dizziness, and confusion;
  • Flushing (warmth or redness).

Side effects that minoxidil may cause include:

  • Changes in your hair's color and texture.

Before you take this drug

Avoid using minoxidil topical on skin that is infected, irritated, or red. It could allow the drug to enter your bloodstream more easily, increasing its danger. Make sure to read the label on your medicine carefully, and make sure that minoxidil is suitable for treating your particular type of hair loss. Only use the topical minoxidil formula made specifically for your gender. Use only the minoxidil formula that is made for your gender.

If you suffer from other health conditions, such as:

  • Heart Disease.

FDA pregnancy class A. There is no evidence that minoxidil will cause harm to an unborn child. If you're pregnant, consult your doctor before using this medication. There is no way to know if minoxidil passes through breast milk or if it can harm nursing babies. If you're breastfeeding, do not take this medication without consulting your doctor.

How to take Minoxidil?

Do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration. Use the recommended dose and do not exceed it. This medicine is not recommended to be taken in excess. It can cause side effects that are dangerous. Use the amount recommended to treat the affected scalp areas. The topical minoxidil is applied two times a day, morning and night.

After applying topical minoxidil, wash your hands.

Only apply the topical minoxidil to your hair. Use it only on your scalp.

You may not notice any new growth for up to four months. The new hair is usually soft and colorless. The hair will eventually have the same thickness and color as the existing hair.

If you don't see hair growth in 4 months, talk to your doctor.

Keep away from heat and moisture. Store at room temperature.

Avoid putting the topical minoxidil foam canister near an open flame or in high temperatures. For example, do not put it on your car's dashboard during a warm day. If the canister gets too warm, it may explode. Empty canisters should never be punctured or burned.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for alopecia:
Use a 1/2-capful (1 mL) or twice daily on the affected areas of the scalp.
Maximum dose: 2 mL
Comments:
It may take up to 2 months of daily application for hair growth.
If hair grows back, the product must be used to continue hair growth. Re-grown hair can disappear in 3–4 months after stopping use, and the balding will continue.
If there is no improvement within 1 year, discontinue use.

What happens if I miss the dose?

As soon as possible, apply the missed dose. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and wait to take it when its due. Don't use additional medicine to compensate for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Overdoses of topical minoxidil are not dangerous. If anyone accidentally swallows the drug, call 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical care.

What should be avoided?

Do not get minoxidil in your eyes, mouth, nose, or other sensitive areas. Rinse the affected area thoroughly with water if this happens. Use only the minoxidil topical on areas that you have been prescribed by your doctor.

Interaction with other drug

Minoxidil applied topically is unlikely to be affected by other drugs taken orally or intravenously. Inform your healthcare providers of all the medicines that you take, including prescription medicines and over-the-counter medications.
