Mepron

Generic name: Atovaquone (A-TOE va-kwone)
Class of drugs: antibiotics

What is Mepron?

Mepron inhibits the growth of single-celled organisms (protozoa), which can lead to disease. Mepron can be used to prevent or treat pneumonia that is caused by Pneumocystis carinii, a fungal infection. Mepron can be used by adults as well as children over the age of 13. Mepron can be used in other ways not mentioned in the medication guide.

Side effects of Mepron

If you experience symptoms of severe allergic reactions (hives or difficulty breathing) or skin reactions (fever or sore throat with burning, pain in the eyes or skin, or red, purple, or blistering skin that is spreading), seek emergency medical attention.

Mepron may cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • If you have liver disease, it can cause fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and dark urine.

Mepron can cause the following side effects:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
  • Headache;
  • Fever;

There may be other side effects. Call your physician if experiencing side effects; report these to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 for guidance and further action.

Before you take this drug

How to take Mepron?

It can be drunk directly out of the bag or poured into a cup or spoon before consumption. Even if you feel better quickly, continue to take Mepron until the prescribed time. Keep away from heat and moisture. Store it in a cool, dry placeStore at room temperature and protect from moisture and heat sources.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for the next dose, skip the missed one. Never take more than one dose at the same time.

What should be avoided?

If your doctor prescribes any restrictions on foods, drinks, or activities, follow their instructions.

Interaction with other drug

Sometimes taking multiple drugs at the same time is not recommended, as certain medicines can have adverse reactions that increase or reduce effectiveness of another medicine you're taking. Mepron may interact with other medications, including vitamins and herbal remedies. Be sure to inform your physician of all medicines you're currently taking as well as those you stop or begin taking in order for a thorough assessment.
