What is Lyumjev?

Insulin works by lowering the levels of sugar (glucose) in your blood. Lyumjev, a fast-acting insulin, is manufactured by humans. It starts working 15 minutes after the injection, reaches its peak in an hour, and continues to work for up to four hours.Lyumjev can be used to control blood sugar levels in children and adults with type 2 diabetes.

Warnings

Do not share a syringe, syringe cartridge, or injection pen with anyone else, even if you have changed the needle.

Before you take this drug

If you have an episode of low sugar or hyperglycemia, you should not take Lyumjev.

Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that Lyumjev will be safe for you:

  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Heart problems
  • Low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalemia)

Inform your doctor if the medicine you are taking contains pioglitazone or rosiglitazone. Certain oral diabetes medications can increase the risk of heart problems if you use insulin.Notify your physician immediately if you become pregnant or nursing.If you're pregnant or plan to become pregnant, follow your doctor's advice about Lyumjev.

How to take Lyumjev?

Follow the instructions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Read all the instructions and directions that come with your prescription.You should read the Instructions for Use leaflet included with your prescription.Lyumjev begins acting quickly. Inject Lyumjev within 20 minutes of starting a meal.Lyumjev can be injected with a syringe, needle, and injection pen (kwikpen Junior kwikpen Tempo Pen) or a syringe.Knowing the type and strength of insulin you use is important. You should not alter the amount or type of insulin that you are taking unless you have been told to by your healthcare provider. If you use different types of diabetes insulin, you may have to adjust the amount and time you take it.

Make sure to check the label of your insulin each time you inject it.Check the blood sugar levels. Consult your doctor to find out what your blood glucose level should be.Lyumjev is available in U-100 (100 units/ml) and U-200 (220 units/ml). Lyumjev U-200 has twice as much insulin in one ml (200 units/ml).Lyumjev U-100 or Lyumjev U-200 may be injected subcutaneously (under the skin) into your stomach, buttocks, and upper legs.Lyumjev U-100 is administered by subcutaneous infusion (continuous infusion) via an insulin pump to an area on your body that has been recommended in the instructions included with your insulin device. Lyumjev U200 can't be given via an insulin pump.Your healthcare provider can also administer Lyumjev U-100 intravenously (in your vein). Lyumjev U200 can't be administered in your vein.When used with a compatible transmitter, the Lyumjev Tempo Pen has a component that allows data connectivity. You will be taught how to use Lyumjev properly by a healthcare provider.Only prepare an injection when it's time to administer it.. If the medicine is cloudy, has changed colour, or contains particles, do not use it. For new medicine, call your pharmacist.Your healthcare provider can show you the best place to inject Lyumjev. Each time you inject, use a new place. Don't inject in the same spot twice. Avoid injecting into damaged skin that is tender, bruised, or pitted.Transferring Lyumjev U-200 to a syringe can cause severe hypoglycemia and overdosage.Even if you have changed the needle, never share an injection pen, cartridge, or syringe. These devices can spread infections and diseases from person to person.If you have hypoglycemia, you may feel hungry, dizzy, or confused. You might also be anxious or shaken. If you want to treat hypoglycemia quickly, consume or drink something that will provide sugar fast (fruit juices, hard candies, crackers, or raisins).In the event of severe hypoglycemia, your doctor may prescribe a glucagon injectable kit. Make sure that your family and friends are familiar with how to administer this injection in case of an emergency.Watch for signs of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), such as increased thirst and urination.Stress can affect blood sugar levels. Other factors that may influence blood sugar include illness, surgery, or alcohol consumption. Consult your doctor before making any changes to your medication or dose schedule.

Lyumjev should be kept in the original container, away from heat and sunlight. Store insulin away from the cooling element of a fridge. Do not use any frozen insulin.

  • Use within the expiration date
  • Use within 28 days. Store it at room temperature.

Lyumjev:

  • Use the vial within 28 days.Store in either the fridge or at room temperature for optimal storage conditions.
  • Use the cartridge within 28 days. Store it at room temperature.

Only use a needle or syringe once, and then place them into a "sharps container" that is puncture-proof. Be sure to follow local or state laws on how to discard this container.Keep the container out of reach of pets and children.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Lyumjev can be taken with food, so you might not have a set schedule for your dosage. Follow the instructions for the brand you are using to determine whether you should take the medication before or after eating. Never take two doses of Lyumjev at the same time.

What happens if I overdose?

Please call the Poison Help Line on their 24-Hour hotline number of 1-800-222-1222 if experiencing symptoms from poison. Alternatively, seek emergency medical attention immediately.An insulin overdose can lead to life-threatening hypoglycemia. The symptoms include confusion, drowsiness or blurred vision, numbness in the mouth or tongue, difficulty speaking, muscle weakness, or jerky movements.

What should be avoided?

Low blood sugar can be caused by insulin. Lyumjev can cause low blood sugar. Avoid driving or operating machines until you are sure of how they will affect you.Check the label of your medication before you inject it to avoid any mistakes.Avoid alcohol consumption.

Side effects of Lyumjev

If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should seek immediate medical attention: swelling or redness where an injection has been given; itchiness on your skin; rash all over your body.

If you experience:

  • Weight gain, swelling of the hands or feet, and feeling short of breath
  • Low sugar; headache; dizziness; rapid heart rate; and feeling anxious.
  • Low sodium: leg cramps, constipation, increased thirst or urination, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness.

Side effects of Lyumjev include:

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia);
  • Allergic reactions
  • Weight gain
  • You may experience swelling in your hands or feet.
  • Itching (pruritus);
  • The skin may become thicker or hollower where the medication was injected.

Interaction with other drug

Other medicines can also affect your blood glucose, and some can increase or decrease insulin's effects. You may also experience fewer hypoglycemic symptoms when you take certain drugs, making it more difficult to detect low blood sugar. Inform your healthcare providers of all the medicines you are taking and those you plan to take. You can include prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
