Drug class: antimanic agents

What is Lithobid?

Lithobid, a mood stabiliser, is used to control or treat manic episodes in bipolar disorder and manic depressive disorder. Hyperactivity, hurried speech, poor judgement, decreased need for sleep, and anger are all symptoms of manic episodes. This medication also helps prevent or reduce the intensity of manic attacks.Lithobid can be used by adults and children over 7 years of age.Lithobid can be used in other ways than those listed in the medication guide.

Side effects of Lithobid

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat.A body that has too much lithium can be fatal. The toxicity of this medicine can happen even if you only take a little bit more than the recommended dose.If you experience any of the following symptoms, stop using Lithobid immediately and contact your doctor: muscle weakness or twitching; drowsiness; feeling light-headed.

Lithobid can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Feeling lightheaded, like you might pass out.
  • Shortness of breath
  • A fever is an increase in thirst or urination.
  • Dizziness, weakness, or spinning sensation
  • Memory problems and hallucinations
  • Problems with muscle or balance movement
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • A seizure (blackout or convulsions);
  • Low sodium level: headache; confusion; slurred words; severe weakness; nausea; loss of coordination; and feeling unsteady.
  • Thyroid problems: weight gain or loss; muscle pain; tremors; feeling hot or cold. Changes in skin or hair. Sweating. Feeling weak or tired. Fast or pounding pulses. Increased bowel movements.
  • Dehydration symptoms include feeling thirsty, hot, and unable to urinate. Heavy sweating or dry, hot skin.
  • Increased pressure in the skull can cause severe headaches, ringing ears, nausea, visual problems, and pain behind the eyes.

If you experience symptoms of serotonin disorder, including agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, or shivering, rapid heart rate, muscle stiffness, and twitching, You may also experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea.

Lithobid side effects may include:

  • Dizziness, drowsiness;
  • Tremors in the hands
  • Trouble walking
  • Increased thirst or urination;
  • Nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite
  • Is rash
  • Blurred vision

Lithobid toxicity (too much of this medicine in the body) can be fatal. The toxicity of this medicine can happen if you just take a little bit more than the recommended dose.If you experience any of the following symptoms, stop using Lithobid immediately and contact your doctor.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to Lithobid, then it is best not to use this product.

Inform your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • Breathing problems
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disease
  • A thyroid disorder
  • An abnormal ECG or electrocardiogram (also called an EKG);
  • Fainting Spells
  • A family member who has died before the age of 45

Lithobid can cause serotonin-induced syndrome if certain medicines are taken together. Make sure you tell your doctor if you are also taking stimulant medicines, opioid medications, herbs, or medication for mental illness, Parkinson's disease, or migraine headaches.Consult your doctor before making any medication changes.Lithobid is not known to harm unborn babies.Tell your doctor immediately if you plan to get pregnant.The use of this medicine is not recommended during breastfeeding.Lithobid should not be used by anyone under the age of 7.

How to take Lithobid?

Follow the directions in the guide or instructions that comes with the medication.Your doctor may occasionally adjust your dosage. Lithobid should never be taken in higher doses or for a longer period of time than prescribed. Overdosing on this medicine can happen if you only take a little more than the recommended dose.Do not chew or crush the tablet.Measuring liquid medicine is important. Use the provided dosing device or a dose-measuring tool (not a spoon).If you have a fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or are sweating more often than normal, call your doctor. Lithobid can cause dehydration, which could affect the dose you need. You should not alter your medication or dose without consulting your doctor.To prevent dehydration, drink extra fluids every day.Your symptoms may not improve for up to three weeks. Continue to take the medication according to instructions, and inform your doctor if you do not see improvement after one week.Blood tests may be required frequently.Tell your surgeon that you use Lithobid if you require surgery.Keep away from moisture and heat at a room temperature. When not in use, keep the bottle tightly shut.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 or seek medical attention immediately if you are taking Lithobid.Early symptoms of lithium toxicity are nausea, diarrhoea, drowsiness, or muscle weakness.

What should be avoided?

Lithobid can affect your reaction time. Avoid driving and other hazardous activities until you are sure of how they will affect you. You may be unable to react.Drink enough fluids to avoid becoming dehydrated or overheated during exercise or in hot weather. You should follow your doctor's advice on the amount and type of fluids to drink. Drinking too much liquid is as dangerous as not drinking enough.Don't change your salt intake. Salt intake can affect the level of lithium in the blood.

Interaction with other drug

Tell your doctor about all medications that you take.Lithobid can be affected by many drugs, including:

  • Buspirone;
  • Fentanyl;
  • John's wort;
  • Tramadol;
  • A "triptan". Headache
  • Tryptophan;
  • Antidepressant or antipsychotic medications;
  • An mao inhibitor—isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.
