What is L-carnitine?

L-carnitine, a naturally occurring substance, is needed by the body for energy.L-carnitine can be used to treat carnitine deficiencies.This medication guide does not list all possible uses for L-carnitine.

Side effects of L-Carnitine

L-carnitine can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • A seizure (convulsions).

Side effects of l-carnitine include:

  • Stomach pain;
  • Nausea, vomiting,
  • Diarrhoea.

Before you take this drug

Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that L-carnitine will be safe for you:

  • Kidney disease (or dialysis if you have it);
  • A history of seizures
  • If you are taking a blood thinner (warfarin Coumadin Jantoven) and have a routine "INR", or prothrombin-time test,

L-carnitine should not harm a baby in utero. Inform your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or thinking of becoming pregnant.It is unknown if levocarnitine can pass into breast milk or if it will harm a baby who is nursing. L-carnitine should not be taken while breastfeeding.

How to take L-carntine?

Do not increase or reduce the dose, nor take this medicine longer than it has been recommended.Take this medication only as prescribed. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or take it for a longer time.Use the provided dosing syringe or a dose-measuring cup or spoon to measure liquid medicines. Ask your pharmacist if you don't have a device for measuring doses.You can take the liquid medicine alone or mix it with soft drinks or food. Slowly sip or chew the mixture.L-carnitine can be taken every 3 to 4 hours at regular intervals. It is best to take this medicine with food or within 30 minutes of eating.You may need to have frequent blood tests if you use L-carnitine.Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember; however, if it is close to time for another scheduled dosage, skip it instead of adding on extra medication to make up for missing one. Don't take extra pills just in case there was something you missed; rather take only as prescribed to compensate.

What should be avoided?

If your doctor prescribes any restrictions regarding food, beverage, or activity, follow their instructions.
