What is Isopto-homatropine (ih)?

Homatropine relaxes the muscles of the iris, or coloured part of your eye. These muscles can be relaxed to widen or dilate your pupil.

Isopto-homatropine is used for the treatment of an eye condition known as uveitis. Isopto-homatropine can also be used to dilate the pupil prior to an eye examination or to reduce pressure in the eye after surgery. This medication guide does not list all possible uses for isopto-homatropine.

Side effects of Isopto-homatropine

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing, hives, facial, lip or throat swelling and difficulty swallowing. Seek medical assistance immediately.

While the risk of side effects when using homatropine in your eyes is low, they can still occur if you allow the medicine to enter your bloodstream.

Isopto-homatropine can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Eye swelling, redness, or crusting
  • Red or puffy eyelids
  • Confusion, or agitation.
  • Unusual thoughts or behaviors

Side effects of isopto-homatropine include:

  • After using eye drops, you may experience stinging or burning.
  • Increased thirst;
  • Increased sensitivity to light in your eyes.

Warnings

If you have glaucoma, then isopto-homatropine is not recommended for you.

Before you take this drug

This medicine should not be used if:

  • Glaucoma,
  • If your eye doctor finds changes in your eyes, they could be signs of glaucoma.

This medicine is not known to harm a baby in utero. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant.

It is unknown if homatropine eye drops pass into breast milk or if they could harm a baby who was nursing. Inform your doctor if you're breastfeeding a child.

How to take Isopto-homatropine?

Do not exceed the prescribed dosage or duration. Use isopto-homatropine only as directed. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or use it for a longer period of time.

Use this medication only if you are not wearing contact lenses. Isopto homatropine contains a preservative that can discolor soft lenses. Wait 15 minutes after taking this medication before you put it in your contacts. Isopto-homatropine may be required to treat uveitis. Before using eye drops, wash your hands.

How to apply eye drops

  • To create a pocket, tilt your head slightly back and pull your lower eyelid down. Make sure the tip of your dropper is pointing downward, then squeeze out several drops by looking up and away.
  • Close your eyes without blinking, squinting, or moving your head. Press your finger gently on the inside corner for 1 minute to prevent the liquid from draining down into your tear duct.
  • Only use the drops prescribed by your doctor. Wait 5 minutes in between each drop if you are using more than one.
  • You should wait at least 10 minutes after using the eye drops prescribed by your doctor before you use any other eye drops.

Avoid touching the tip or placing it directly in your eye. If the dropper is contaminated, it can cause serious vision problems.

If the liquid is discolored or contains particles, do not use it. For new medication, call your pharmacist. Store away from moisture or heat at room temperature. Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. When not in use, keep the bottle tightly sealed.

What happens if i miss the dose?

As soon as you recall, apply the missed dose. If it's almost time to take your next dose, skip the missed dose. Don't use extra medicine to compensate for a missed dose.

What happens if i overdose?

If anyone accidentally swallows the medication, seek emergency medical care or call poison help at 1-800-222-1222.

What should be avoided?

Isopto homatropine can cause blurred vision, and it may affect your thinking or reaction. You should be careful when driving or doing anything else that requires you to have a clear vision and to be alert.

Isopto-homatropine makes your eyes more sensitive. When you're outdoors, protect your eyes from the sun.

Interaction with other drug

Homatropine in the eye is unlikely to interact with other drugs that you may take orally or by injection. Many drugs interact with each other. Inform your healthcare provider about the medicines you take, including any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal remedies.
