Hyoscyamine can be used to treat a variety of stomach and intestinal disorders, including ulcers and IBS. It can also be used to control spasms of the bladder, kidneys, or digestive tract and reduce stomach acid.People with symptoms of Parkinson’s disease may be treated with hyoscyamine to reduce their tremors.The drying agent hyoscyamine can also be used to treat excessive sweating, runny rhinitis, and excessive salivation.Hyoscyamine can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.
Side effects of Hyoscyamine
If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing or swelling of lips, face, tongue or throat. Seek medical assistance immediately.
Hyoscyamine may cause serious side effects. If you experience:
- Anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, or unusual thoughts and behaviors
- Memory problems are a sign of weakness.
- Slurred speech
- Problems with muscle or balance movement
- Diarrhea;
- You may feel your heart flutter or pound.
Side effects of hyoscyamine include:
- Feeling weak or tired due to dizziness
- Reduced sweating and decreased urination
- Blurred vision
- Rash;
- Dry mouth; decreased sense of smell;
- Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and bloating;
- Diarrhea, constipation;
- Headache;
- Sleep problems (insomnia);
- Impotence or difficulty having an orgasm

Warnings
Hyoscyamine should not be used if you suffer from urination issues, stomach obstruction, or severe colitis.
Before you take this drug
Hyoscyamine should not be used if:
- a bladder obstruction or any other urination problem;
- an enlarged prostate
- a stomach or bowel obstruction, including paralytic ileus;
- the toxic megacolon, or severe ulcerative colitis;
- glaucoma;
- myasthenia gravis.
Hyoscyamine should not be used by children under 2 years of age.
Tell your physician if any of the following occur:
- Heart problems
- High blood pressure
- Kidney disease
- A colostomy or ileostomy;
- A thyroid disorder,
- Hiatal hernia in conjunction with GERD.
This medicine is not known to harm an unborn child. Inform your physician immediately if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant.Breastfeeding may not be possible while taking this medication. You should consult your doctor if you are concerned about any risks.
How to take Hyoscyamine?
Read all instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow all directions. Follow the directions on the label.Follow the directions on the label for hyoscyamine when giving it to a child.Do not chew or crush an extended-release tablet.Measuring liquid medicine is important. Use the provided dosing device or a dose-measuring tool (not a spoon).Only remove an oral disintegrating tablet when you're ready to use it. Place the tablet under your tongue to dissolve. As the tablet dissolves, you can swallow it several times. After the tablet has dissolved, you can drink water.Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.
What happens if I miss the dose?
If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.
What happens if I overdose?

What should be avoided?
Avoid taking antacids when you are taking hyoscyamine. Antacids may make hyoscyamine less absorbable. Take an antacid after taking hyoscyamine.Alcohol and hyoscyamine combined can have side effects.Avoid overheating or dehydration during exercise and hot weather. You may become more susceptible to heat stroke if you take hyoscyamine.Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities until you have determined how the medicine will affect you. You may be unable to react properly.
Interaction with other drug
Tell your doctor about your other medications, including:
- Antidepressants are a type of medication.
- Medicine to treat mental illness
- Cold or allergy medication (Benadryl et al.)
- Medicine to treat or prevent nausea or vomiting
- MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine and similar products.
