Generic Name: Fluticasone and vilanterol [floo-TIK-a-sone-and-vye-LAN-ter-ol]
Drug Class: Bronchodilator combinations

What is Breo Ellipta?

Breo Ellipta Inhalation Powder is a blend consisting of fluticasone and vilanterol. Fluticasone is a steroid that stops the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. Vilanterol is a bronchodilator that helps relax breathing muscles to aid breathing.Breo Ellipta can be described as a daily combination medicine for adults suffering from asthma or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) to improve symptoms and prevent bronchospasm and asthma attacks.

For people suffering from COPD Breo Ellipta is a long-term treatment. For people suffering from asthma, Breo Ellipta is a brief-term therapy until asthma symptoms have been controlled in conjunction with other medicines.Vilanterol, when taken alone, can increase the risk of death for asthmatics. However, the risk is not elevated when fluticasone is used in combination with other products.

Warnings

Breo Ellipta is not a medication to use as a rescue. It won't work quickly enough to treat asthma attacks or bronchospasm. Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, such as prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as vitamins and herbal supplements. Breo Ellipta can interact with other medications and cause serious adverse effects. Discuss with your healthcare provider whether you are taking antifungal or anti-HIV medications.

Before you take this drug

You shouldn't make use of Breo Ellipta if you are sensitive to fluticasone, vilanterol, or milk protein. Fluticasone could reduce your immune system's strength and make it easier for you to develop an infection or worsen an infection that you may have already or recently experienced. Discuss with your doctor any infection or illness you have suffered in the past few weeks.

To be sure Breo Ellipta is safe for you, consult your physician to determine whether you suffer from:

  • Glaucoma or cataracts.
  • An immune system that is weak.
  • Heart disease and excessive blood pressure.
  • Liver disease.
  • A thyroid disorder.
  • A seizure.
  • Diabetes.
  • Any kind of illness (bacterial, fungal, or parasitic).
  • Osteoporosis.

The long-term use of steroids can result in bone loss (osteoporosis), particularly in the event that you smoke, are not active, don't receive sufficient calcium or vitamin D from your food, or have a history of osteoporosis in your family. Discuss with your physician regarding your risks.

Inform your doctor if you are expecting. It's not clear if Breo Ellipta can harm an unborn baby. But if you have untreated or uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy, it could result in complications like preterm birth or eclampsia (dangerously elevated blood pressure that could cause medical issues for both the mother and baby). The benefits of treating asthma could outweigh the risks for the baby. Breastfeeding is not advised while taking this medicine. Talk to your doctor about any risks. Breo Ellipta has not been recommended to be used by anyone younger than 18 years old.

How to take Breo Ellipta?

Utilize the Breo Ellipta inhalation product exactly as directed by your doctor. Follow all instructions on the prescription label and review all medication manuals or instructions. Your doctor may modify your dose.

Breo Ellipta isn't an asthma treatment that can be used as a backup for bronchospasm-related attacks. Use only fast-acting inhalation medicines for attacks. Your dosage requirements may change as a result of surgery, illness, stress, or a recent asthma attack. Do not alter the amount of your Breo Ellipta dose or dosage schedule without consulting your physician. Make sure to rinse your mouth with clean water after using the device for inhalation to avoid throat thrush (a fungal infection of the throat or mouth).
