What is Hydrochlorothiazide and quinapril?

Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic. Quinapril belongs to the ACE-inhibitor family (ACE is an angiotensin-converting enzyme).Combination medicine Hydrochlorothiazide and quinapril are used for hypertension. You may reduce your chances of suffering a stroke or heart attack by lowering your blood pressure.This medication guide does not list all possible uses for quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide.

Side effects of Hydrochlorothiazide and quinapril

If you experience symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, such as hives, stomach pains, difficulty breathing or swelling, or skin reactions (such as a fever, sore throat, or burning eyes), or severe skin irritation (such as rashes that are red, purple, or even blue and cause blistering or peeling), seek emergency medical attention.If you're African-American, your chances of having an allergic reaction are higher.

Both quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide can cause severe side effects. If you experience:

  • A feeling of lightheadedness, as if you could pass out.
  • Blurred vision, pain in the eyes, or seeing halos around lights
  • Swelling and weight gain; a shortness of breath
  • A sudden feeling of weakness, chills, or fever; sore throats; mouth ulcers; and sores on the lips
  • High potassium: nausea; chest pains; abnormal heartbeats; and loss of mobility.
  • Constipation; leg cramps.
  • Low levels of sodium cause headaches, confusion, slurred words, extreme weakness, nausea, a lack of coordination, and feeling unsteady.

Side effects associated with hydrochlorothiazide or quinapril include:

  • Cough;
  • Headache, dizziness;
  • Tired feeling
  • Muscle pain.

Warnings

Use only if you are not pregnant. Stop taking quinapril or hydrochlorothiazide if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor immediately.This medicine should not be used if the patient has ever suffered from angioedema. It is also recommended that you avoid it if your body cannot urinate or if there are any ACE-inhibitors or sulfa drugs. Avoid taking hydrochlorothiazide or quinapril 36 hours prior to or following the use of a medicine containing sacubitril, such as Entresto.Do not take hydrochlorothiazide or quinapril if you have diabetes.

Before you take this drug

This medicine should not be used if the following conditions apply:

  • You have had angioedema in the past.
  • You are not able to urinate.
  • You recently took the heart medication sacubitril.
  • If you've ever experienced a severe reaction to an ACE inhibitor, such as benazepril (captopril), enalapril (enalapril), fosinopril (lisinopril), moexipril, perindopril, or quinapril, ramipril trandolapril

Take the medicine Entersto within 36 hours of taking sacubitril.Do not take hydrochlorothiazide or quinapril with aliskiren, a blood pressure medication.If you suffer from kidney disease, it is important to not take hydrochlorothiazide or quinapril together with aliskiren.

If you've ever:

  • Kidney disease or dialysis (if applicable)
  • Liver diseases, such as cirrhosis.
  • Glaucoma;
  • Congestive heart failure;
  • Gout;
  • Lupus;
  • An allergy to penicillin or sulfa drugs;
  • If you're on a diet low in salt,

Use only if you are not pregnant. If you get pregnant, stop using the medication and call your doctor immediately. Quinapril may cause harm or even death to an unborn child if taken during the second or third trimester.If you are taking hydrochlorothiazide or quinapril, it is not recommended that you breastfeed.Anyone younger than the age of 18 is not allowed to use hydrochlorothiazide or quinapril.

How to take Hydrochlorothiazide and quinapril?

Read all the instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow the directions. Sometimes, your doctor will change the dose. You must take the medication exactly as prescribed.

If you experience persistent vomiting, diarrhea, or if your sweating is higher than normal, then you should call your doctor. It is easy to become dehydrated when taking quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide. It can cause very low blood pressure or electrolyte disorders, as well as renal failure.You may also need blood tests every now and then.Tell your doctor if you are currently taking this medication and if you require surgery.Even if you are feeling well, continue to take this medication as prescribed. High blood pressure can often be symptomless. Blood pressure medications may be needed for life.Keep away from heat, moisture, and light.

Quinapril orally, 10–20 mg, and hydrochlorothiazide, 12.5–25 mg

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for the next dose, skip the missed one. Never take more than one dose at a time.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

The use of hydrochlorothiazide can increase the risk of cancerous skin. Avoid tanning or sunlight. When you're outdoors, wear protective clothing and use sunblock with an SPF of 30 or more. You may be asked to undergo regular skin checks by your doctor.Alcohol can lower blood pressure further and increase the side effects of hydrochlorothiazide or quinapril.Use only potassium or salt supplements if your doctor tells you so.You may get dizzy if you stand up quickly from a seated or lying position.Drink enough liquids to avoid becoming dehydrated or overheated during physical activity, in hot weather, or when exercising. You should follow your doctor's advice on the amount and type of fluids to drink. Drinking too much fluid can sometimes be just as dangerous as not drinking enough.

Interaction with other drug

Inform your doctor of all other medications you are taking, including:

  • Any other blood pressure medications
  • Lithium;
  • Everolimus, sirolimus, temsirolimus;
  • An antibiotic—demeclocycline, doxycycline, minocycline, eravacycline, omadacycline, sarecycline, tetracycline;
  • Aspirin (as well as ibuprofen, Motrin, and Advil), naproxen, celecoxib (Aleve), diclofenac (indomethacin), meloxicam, and others are all nsaids.
