What is Hydrochlorothiazide and fosinopril?
Fosinopril acts as an ACE inhibitor. ACE stands for angiotensin-converting enzyme. Side effects of Hydrochlorothiazide and fosinopril
If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, severe stomach pain, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat.
Both fosinopril and hydrochlorothiazide can cause serious side effects. If you experience:
- A feeling of lightheadedness, as if you could pass out.
- Pale skin is prone to bleeding or bruising.
- Fever; swollen or painful gums; mouth sores that hurt; difficulty swallowing; flu or cold symptoms
- High potassium: nausea; slow or abnormal heart rate; weakness; and loss of mobility.
- Low sodium, leg cramps, constipation, increased thirst, increased urination or numbness, muscle weakness, or a limp feeling
- Low levels of sodium: headache; confusion; slurred words; severe weakness; nausea. Loss of coordination. Feeling unsteady.
- Severe skin reaction: fever, sore neck; swelling of the face, tongue, or eyes; burning pain in your eyes. This is followed by a reddish or purple skin rash that spreads to other parts of your body, especially your face and upper body, and results in blistering and skin peeling.
Some of the common side effects associated with hydrochlorothiazide or fosinopril include:
- Headache, dizziness;
- Tired feeling

Warnings
Use caution if you're pregnant. You should not use this medication if you are pregnant.This medicine should not be used if you have difficulty urinating or if you are allergic to sulfa drugs or any ACE inhibitors.Do not take hydrochlorothiazide or fosinopril with any medicine that contains aliskiren, such as Amturnide, Tekturna, or Tekamlo, if you have diabetes.
Before you take this drug
This medicine should not be used if you have an allergy to fosinopril or hydrochlorothiazide, or:
- You are unable to urinate.
- You are allergic to sulfa medications.
- You are allergic to other ACE inhibitors, such as captopril (benazepril), lisinopril (enalapril), quinapril (ramipril), trandolapril, and others.
Do not take hydrochlorothiazide or fosinopril with any medicine that contains aliskiren, such as Amturnide, Tekturna, or Tekamlo, if you have diabetes.If you have kidney problems, you may need to avoid using fosinopril and hydrochlorothiazide with aliskiren.
Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that hydrochlorothiazide or fosinopril will be safe for you:
- Kidney disease (or dialysis if you have it);
- Liver disease, or cirrhosis.
- Congestive heart failure;
- Gout;
- Lupus;
- Diabetes
- An allergy to penicillin or sulfa drugs.
Use this medicine only if you're not pregnant. Fosinopril may cause harm or even death to an unborn child if taken during the second or third trimester.Fosinopril and hydrochlorothiazide can be passed into breast milk, which may cause harm to a nursing infant. Breastfeeding mothers must not take this medicine.
How to take Hydrochlorothiazide with fosinopril?
Please follow all the instructions on the prescription label. Sometimes your doctor will change the dose. Take hydrochlorothiazide or fosinopril only at the recommended dose. Do not exceed this amount or take it for longer.If you experience persistent vomiting, diarrhea, or if your sweating is higher than normal, call your doctor. It is easy to become dehydrated when taking fosinopril and hydrochlorothiazide. It can cause very low blood pressure, electrolyte disorders, or renal failure.You will need to check your blood pressure often. If you've been vomiting or dehydrated, your blood and urine could also be tested. Visit your doctor regularly.Even if you are feeling well, continue to take this medication as prescribed. High blood pressure can often be symptomless. Blood pressure medications may be needed for the rest of your life.
Tell the surgeon in advance if you will need surgery. It may be necessary to temporarily stop taking the medication.Store away from heat, moisture, and light. When not in use, keep the bottle tightly shut.
Details on dosage
Usual Adult Dose for Hypertension:
Fosinopril 10-40 mg; Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5-37.5 mg orally per day can be taken orally as treatment options.
Comments: The effect of fosinopril 10 mg and hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg was similar to the effect seen with monotherapy using either fosinopril 40 mg or hydrochlorothiazide 37.5 mg.
Use: hypertension treatment when monotherapy has failed to achieve the desired result or in substitution of the individual components titrated.
What happens if I miss the dose?
As soon as you remember, take the missed dose immediately.. If your next scheduled dosage is approaching, skip the missed dose. You should not take more medicine to compensate for a missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Call 1-800-222-1222 immediately if you suspect poisoning, or seek immediate medical treatment.
What should be avoided?
Alcohol can lower blood pressure further and increase the side effects of hydrochlorothiazide or fosinopril.Avoid overheating or dehydration during exercise and hot weather. You should follow your doctor's advice on the amount and type of liquid to drink. Drinking too much liquid is as dangerous as not drinking enough.Avoid standing up quickly from a seated or lying-down position. You may feel dizzy. To avoid a fall, get up slowly.If you take hydrochlorothiazide or fosinopril and are using potassium supplements, do not use salt substitutes unless you have been told to by your doctor.
Interaction with other drug
Other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal remedies, may also interact with hydrochlorothiazide or fosinopril. Inform your healthcare providers of all the medicines you are taking and those you plan to take.
