What is Fremanezumab?

Fremanezumab prevents migraine headaches among adults. Fremanezumab can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Fremanezumab

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat. A reaction to fremanezumab may occur 1 month after the injection.

Fremanezumab can cause a variety of side effects.

  • Pain, redness, or a hard lump may occur where the medicine has been injected.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to fremanezumab, then it is best not to use it. Fremanezumab should not be used by anyone under the age of 18. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant. The safety of fremanezumab for an unborn child is unknown. Preeclampsia, which can cause medical complications for both mother and child, may occur if migraines are present during pregnancy. Preventing migraines can be more beneficial than the risks for both mother and baby. Breast-feeding may not be possible while taking this medication. You should consult your doctor if you are concerned about any risks.

How to take Fremanezumab?

Read all instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow all directions. Follow the directions on the label. Fremanezumab can be injected into the skin. You may be taught how to use the medicine by a healthcare provider. Fremanezumab can be given in the form of a single injection every month or three injections (in separate vials) every three months. Please read and follow all instructions for use that come with your medication. If you do not understand the instructions, don't use fremanezumab. If you have any questions, ask your pharmacist or doctor. Prepare your injection only when it is time to administer it. If the medicine appears cloudy, changed color, froze solid or contains particles, do not use it and contact your pharmacist instead. For new medications please speak to them directly first. Refrigerate fremanezumab in its original container in the refrigerator, away from direct light, and do not freeze or shake this medicine.

Before injecting, take steps to bring the medicine up to room temperature for at least 30 minutes after removing from the refrigerator, such as using hot water, sunlight or microwave heat sources. Store fremanezumab at room temperature in its original container for no longer than seven days at room temperature before discarding. After seven days, any medicine still left stored should be thrown away as per FDA recommendations. Each autoinjector, syringe or prefilled autoinjector is intended for single use only; after it has been utilized once, discard it regardless if some medication remains inside it. Once used, store needles or syringes in an indestructible sharps container - following any applicable local or state laws on proper disposal procedures - out of reach from pets and children.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for migraine prophylaxis:
Subcutaneously, 225 mg once a month
Alternatively, 675mg subcutaneously can be given once every three months.
Comments:
To administer 675mg subcutaneously, three consecutive subcutaneous injections of 225mg are given.
If you are switching between dosage options, give the first dose on the next scheduled administration date.
Use: To prevent migraine headaches.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Start your injection schedule 1 or 3 months after you have finished the medication.

What should be avoided?

Depending on what restrictions have been outlined by your physician regarding food, beverages or activities, follow their orders precisely.

Interaction with other drug

Other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal products, may also affect fremanezumab. Informing your physician of all medicines you are currently taking and any that have recently been added or discontinued should help facilitate communication and ensure continuity in care.
