What is Fluocinolone topical oil?
Fluocinolone topical (for skin) is a steroid. It inhibits the action of chemicals that cause inflammation in the body. The body oil fluocinolone is used to treat atopic dermatitis. Fluocinolone oil for the scalp is used to treat psoriasis. This medication guide does not list all possible uses for fluocinolone topical.
Side effects of Fluocinolone topical oil

- Headache, blurred vision

Fluocinolone topical oils may cause the following side effects:
- Mild skin irritation, such as mild itching or burning;
- Temporary hair loss
- Swollen hair follicles;
- Blisters, pimples, or crusting on treated skin
- Changes in the color of treated skin
- Itching or rashes around the mouth
- Fever, cough, sore or stuffy throat;
- Red spots or tiny veins around the nose, cheeks, or chin

This medication contains peanut oil. You should tell your doctor if there is a peanut allergen. This medication can cause side effects in children because they absorb more through their skin. If your symptoms don't improve after 2 weeks, if they worsen, or if there are signs of an infection, call your doctor.
Before you take this drug
This medication should not be used if you have an allergy to fluocinolone. This medication contains oil from peanuts. You should tell your doctor if there is a peanut allergy. Tell your doctor about any skin infections. Tell your doctor as well if you suffer from type 2 diabetes. Topical steroids absorbed through your skin can increase the sugar levels in your blood or urine. FDA pregnancy class C There is no information on whether or not fluocinolone-topically applied oil can harm an unborn child. If you plan to get pregnant or are already pregnant, tell your doctor. The oil does not pass into breast milk, nor is it known if the topical fluocinolone could harm a baby who is nursing. If you are breastfeeding a child, do not apply the medication to your chest. Long-term use of this medication can cause side effects or growth delays in children. If you feel that your child's growth is slower than normal, talk to your doctor.
How to take Fluocinolone topical oil?
Do not exceed the recommended dosage or use it for longer than prescribed. Fluocinolone oil should not be used in higher or lower amounts or for a longer period of time than prescribed. Topical steroid medicines can be absorbed by the skin and cause side effects in other parts of the body. Do not apply fluocinolone oil to your face, your underarms, or your groin unless you have been told by your doctor.This medication should not be applied directly onto skin folds. Fluocinolone topical oils should be used with clean hands. Apply a thin layer of fluocinolone oil to the skin after moisturizing it. Rub the oil gently into your skin. Only use enough oil to cover the affected skin. Cover treated skin with a bandage or any other covering only if your doctor says so.
Apply fluocinolone oil topically at night to treat scalp psoriasis. Apply the medicine to the scalp by applying a thin layer of the medication directly to the scalp after thoroughly wetting or dampening the hair. Cover your scalp with a shower cap and massage the medicine in. Let the medication stay on for 4 to 8 hours or overnight. The next morning, wash and rinse your hair thoroughly with regular shampoo. Fluocinolone can be used daily, even if you don't wash your hair. Apply the medication to the scalp without wetting your hair. After leaving the medication on your scalp for 4 hours, rinse it thoroughly. Fluocinolone oil can be used to treat atopic dermitis. It is recommended that you apply it twice daily, for up to 4 weeks, or until the symptoms have disappeared. Fluocinolone topical oils can be used to treat scalp psoriasis. Use it daily until symptoms subside. You can continue to use the medication every week or as often as necessary to keep your skin smooth and free of scales or crusts.
If your symptoms don't improve after 2 weeks, if they worsen, or if signs of an infection appear on your skin, call your doctor. You may need to visit your doctor more often if you take this medication for a long time. Store away from moisture or heat at room temperature. When not in use, keep the bottle tightly shut.
What happens if I miss the dose?
As soon as you recall, take the missed dose. If your next scheduled dosage is approaching, skip the missed dose. You should not take extra medicine to compensate for a missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. Overdoses of fluocinolone oil are unlikely to cause life-threatening symptoms. Long-term use of high steroid dosages can cause symptoms like thinning of the skin, easy bleeding, changes in body shape and location (especially on your face, neck, back, and waist), acne or facial hair growth, menstrual issues, impotence, or loss of interest.
What should be avoided?
Use fluocinolone only after consulting your doctor to treat skin conditions. Avoid getting the medication in your eye. If you do get this medication in your eyes, rinse it with water. Use fluocinolone oil only on open or broken wounds.
Interaction with other drug
Fluocinolone applied topically is unlikely to be affected by other drugs taken orally or injected. Many drugs interact with each other. Inform your healthcare providers of all the medicines you take, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
