What is Zyban?

Zyban is a medication that helps people quit smoking by decreasing cravings as well as other withdrawal symptoms.Bupropion can also be employed for reasons not mentioned in this guideline.

Warnings

It is not advised to use Zyban in the event of seizures, eating disorders, or if you've abruptly quit drinking medications for seizures, alcohol, or sedatives. If you're taking Wellbutrin for depression, you should not take Zyban to stop smoking.

Do not take bupropion if you've used an MAO inhibitor within the past 14 days.An interaction that could be dangerous to a substance could take place. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine.Zyban could cause seizures, particularly for those suffering from specific medical conditions or taking certain medications. Talk to the doctor about all your medical conditions as well as the medicines you are taking.

Before you take this drug

Do not take Zyban if you've taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 14 days. A risky drug interaction may occur. MAO inhibitors are isocarboxazid linezolid, methylene blue injection rasagiline, phenelzine, and tranylcypromine, among others.

Zyban is not a good choice. If you're allergic to bupropion or suffer from:

  • A seizure disorder;
  • An eating disorder, such as anorexia, bulimia,
  • If you recently stopped drinking seizure medicine, alcohol, or a sedative (such as Xanax, Valium, Fiorinal, Klonopin, and others),

Do not take an MAO inhibitor for more than 14 days prior to or 14 days following the use of bupropion. A dangerous drug interaction may occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid linezolid, phenelzine and rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.Do not use Zyban to treat more than one problem at a time. If you are taking Wellbutrin to treat depression, do not take it with a plan to stop smoking.

Zyban can cause seizures, in particular, if you suffer from certain medical conditions or take certain drugs. Talk to your doctor about the medical conditions you suffer from and the medications you take.

To make sure that this medication is appropriate for you, inform your doctor if you've previously had:

  • A head injury, seizures, head injury, or spinal cord tumor
  • Narrow-angle glaucoma;
  • Heart illness or high blood pressure or even a heart attack
  • Diabetes;
  • Liver or kidney illness (especially cirrhosis)

How to take Zyban?

Use Zyban exactly as directed by your physician. Follow the instructions on the prescription label. Don't take this medication in smaller or larger quantities or for longer than the recommended time. In excess of this medication could increase the chances of having seizures.

Once you begin taking Zyban, you could continue smoking for a week or so following the time you begin taking the medication. You should set a date for quitting smoking in the second week after treatment. Consult your physician when you're having trouble stopping smoking after using Zyban for a minimum of seven weeks.

Your doctor might prescribe nicotine gum or patches to assist you in your quitting treatment. Take note of all directions and information about this nicotine-based product. Avoid smoking at any time while you use a nicotine-based product in conjunction with Zyban. Smoking too much nicotine may result in serious side effects.

There is a possibility that you will experience withdrawal symptoms after quitting smoking, which include: a greater appetite and weight gain; difficulty sleeping; difficulty staying focused; a slow heart rate; experiencing the urge to smoke; and being anxious, agitated, or depressed. You may also feel angry, angered, frustrated, or angry. These symptoms can happen in conjunction with or without the use of medication like Zyban.The cessation of smoking can also lead to an increase or worsening of mental health issues, like depression.

Do not alter the dosage or stop taking this medication suddenly in the event of seizures while taking this medication. A sudden stop can cause uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms.

Certain people who take Zyban have experienced high blood pressure that was extreme, particularly when using nicotine replacement products (patch or chewing gum). Your blood pressure could need to be monitored prior to or during your treatment with bupropion.This medication can result in false-positive results on your test for drug screening. Do I be concerned if I miss a dose?

You should take the missed dose as soon as you can remember. Avoid your missed dosage if it's close to the time of the next dose. Do not take any additional medicine to make up for the missed dose.

What will happen if I take excessively?

Get medical attention immediately or contact the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222. A bupropion overdose could be fatal. Overdose symptoms may include muscular stiffness, hallucinations, irregular or rapid heartbeats, and shallow breathing, as well as fainting.

What should be avoided?

Drinking alcohol with bupropion can increase the risk of having seizures. If you regularly drink alcohol, discuss it with your doctor before adjusting the amount of alcohol you consume. Zyban may also trigger seizures in those who drink lots of alcohol. They may then stop drinking after they begin taking the medication.

Zyban can impair your reaction or thinking. Take note of your surroundings when you drive or do other activities which require you to be alert.

Side effects of Zyban

Take immediate medical attention. If you notice any of the following symptoms warning of an allergic reaction (hives, itching and swelling of the glands, breathing difficulties, or swelling of your throat or face) or a severe skin reaction (fever and throat soreness, eye burning, irritation, and an ailment that is purple or red with peeling and blisters),

Inform your physician of any symptoms that are becoming more severe or new, for example, a change in your mood or behavior such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or being irritable, angry, or agitated. You may also feel hostile, angry, active, restless, excessively active (mentally and physically), or have thoughts about taking your own life or harming yourself.

See your doctor right away. If you suffer from:

  • A seizure (convulsions);
  • Disorientation, sudden changes in behavior or mood;
  • Blurred vision blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye swelling or pain, or the appearance of halos around lights
  • Irregular or fast heartbeats;
  • An intense episode of racing thoughts and energy levels, reckless behavior, feeling very happy or annoyed, talking much more frequently than you normally do, and severe sleep problems.

Common Zyban side effects can include:

  • Dry lips; a sore throat; nasal stuffiness;
  • Ears ringing;
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite;
  • Sleep problems (insomnia);
  • The sensation of sweating, tremors, or feeling anxious or nervous
  • Fast heartbeats;
  • Confusion, agitation, and hostility;
  • Rash;
  • Weight loss;
  • Increased urination
  • Headache, dizziness,
  • Joint or muscle discomfort.

Details on dosage

Usual Adult Dose for Smoking Cessation:

Start Dose: 150 mg taken orally every day, once.
Maintenance: Depending on the clinical responses, this dosage could increase to 300 mg/day. Being administered in the form of 150 mg twice daily at least 3 days after starting treatment.

Interaction with other drugs

There is a greater risk of suffering from seizures if using other medications in conjunction with Zyban.

Certain drugs may be incompatible with bupropion. Inform your doctor about the medicines you take and the ones you begin or stop using in the course of therapy with Zyban.
