What is Fiorinal?

Fiorinal is made up of aspirin, butalbital, and caffeine. Aspirin can be used as a pain reliever, an anti-inflammatory agent, and a fever-reducing agent. Butalbital is an anti-barbiturate. It reduces the muscle contractions in tension headaches. Caffeine is an important central nervous system stimulant. It eases muscle contractions in blood vessels, which improves the flow of blood. Fiorinal can be used to treat migraines caused by tension. The medicine is not intended to treat headaches that occur and disappear. Fiorinal capsules are available in a two-tone green capsule. Each capsule's lid is printed in red with "FIORINAL 955" in red.

Warnings

There is no need to take Fiorinal when you suffer from stomach ulcers or a liver condition that is severe, such as porphyria, hemorrhage, or a blood clotting condition, or if you have an allergy to any NSAID.Aspirin can cause intestinal or stomach bleeding, which can lead to fatal bleeding.Stop taking Fiorinal and consult your physician immediately if you notice bloody, black, or tarry stool and you're coughing blood or vomit that appears to be coffee ground.Aspirin shouldn't be administered to a child or teen with symptoms of fever.Butalbital could be a drug that can cause addiction. The misuse of a habit-forming medication could lead to addiction, overdose, or even death.

Before you take this drug

It is not recommended to use Fiorinal in the event that you are sensitive to aspirin, butalbital, caffeine, or if you suffer from:

  • A blood clotting disorder, such as hemophilia von Willebrand's disease, low platelets;
  • Severe vitamin K deficiency;
  • Sore liver;
  • An extreme allergic reaction (sneezing and runny nose or wheezing) after taking aspirin, or an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication) like ibuprofen or celecoxib; diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam, naproxen, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, and many other nsaids;
  • A stomach ulcer;
  • Porphyria (a genetic disorder of enzymes that can cause symptoms in the nervous system or skin).

Not recommended for use by any person younger than 18. The use of Fiorinal in teens or children suffering from chickenpox or flu symptoms could result in an extremely fatal condition known as Reye's syndrome.

To ensure that Fiorinal is safe for you, ask your doctor if you've ever experienced:

  • Kidney or liver disease;
  • Bleeding issues;
  • A had injury or brain tumor;
  • A stomach or intestinal problem;
  • Unactive thyroid;
  • Allergies;
  • An increased prostate or urinary problem
  • Addison's disease (an adrenal gland disorder)

Do not take Fiorinal in pregnancy unless your physician advises that you should. Using butalbital during pregnancy can cause withdrawal symptoms in newborns. Aspirin use in the final 20 weeks of pregnancy could cause harm to the baby and result in pregnancy-related complications.Do not breastfeed.

How to take Fiorinal?

Follow all instructions on the prescription label and read the medication guide or instructions sheets. Make sure you are taking the dose that is most effective for your particular condition.Butalbital could be a habit-forming drug. Intoxication can lead to addiction, overdose, or even death. Keep the medication away from the reach of others who might want to get it. Offering or selling Fiorinal is not allowed under the law.Fiorinals may affect the results of certain tests.Inform any physician treating you of your medication use.The use of Fiorinal is typically for short-term intervals only. There are withdrawal symptoms that can occur when you stop taking the medicine abruptly after lengthy usage. Consult your physician before taking the medication offKeep tightly sealed at room temperature away from heat, moisture and light sources. Store your medication in a location where nobody will be able to use it incorrectly.

Details on dosage

Usual Dose for Pain in Adults:
A capsule or two, orally every 4 hours, if needed, not exceeding 6 capsules daily
Comments:
Due to the high level of physical dependence, long-term use of this medication is not advised.
The efficacy and safety of treating multiple headaches with this product are not established.
Uses: To relieve the symptoms that are caused by tension (or muscle contraction) headaches.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Fiorinal can be utilized when it is required. If you're following a prescribed dosage, do not miss any doses. Do not take two doses at the same time.Do not exceed 6 tablets or capsules within 24 hours.

What happens if I overdose?

Get medical attention immediately or contact the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222. In the event of an overdose, butalbital can cause death. The effects of an overdose can cause extreme dizziness, confusion, a feeling of being uneasy, insomnia, shaking, and rapid or pounding heartbeats. vomiting, stomach pain, rapid breathing, sensations of heat and ringing in your ears, weak or slow breathing, bleeding or bruises, seizures (convulsions), and fainting or coma.

What should be avoided?

Avoid driving and other hazardous activities until you understand the effects of this medication on your body. Your reaction could be affected. Consult a physician or pharmacist prior to using any other medications for swelling, pain, fever, or symptoms of the cold or flu. They could contain ingredients that are like aspirin (such as ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen).Beware of drinking alcohol.

Side effects of Fiorinal

See a doctor immediately when you are experiencing symptoms that indicate an allergic reaction. Fiorinal (hives or breathing problems and swelling of your throat or face) or an intense skin reaction (fever or burning eyes, sore throat or skin rashes, an ailment that(If the area around your blisters or peeling appears purple-red in colour and has blisters).

Do not take Fiorinal or other medications, and get medical attention in the event of a serious reaction to a drug that affects various parts of your body. Symptoms may include the appearance of a skin rash or fever, swollen glands, muscle aches, extreme weakness, and unusual bruising or redness of your eyes or skin.

Contact your doctor immediately. If you suffer from:

  • Bloody or tarry stool;
  • Vomiting blood or coffee grounds-like material.
  • Any bleeding that does not stop.

Common gastrointestinal adverse effects could be:

  • Drowsiness;
  • Dizziness.

Interaction with other drug

The use of Fiorinal along with other medicines that cause drowsiness can increase the severity of this effect. Talk to your doctor prior to using an opioid drug, a sleeping pill, a muscle relaxer, or medication to treat an anxiety disorder as well as seizures.

Discuss with your doctor any other medications you take, including:

  • Mercaptopurine;
  • Methotrexate;
  • Probenecid;
  • Be careful before beginning taking blood thinners such as warfarin, coumadin or jantoven as this could increase risk;
  • Insulin, or oral diabetes medicine;
  • Steroid medicine such as prednisone;
  • An mao inhibitor, isocarboxazid linezolid, methylene blue injection phenelzine, and tranylcypromine, among other mao inhibitors;
  • The following are nsaid (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines): aspirin, ibuprofen (advil, motrin), naproxen (aleve), celecoxib, diclofenac (also known as indomethacin), diclofe, and more.
