What is Father John’s Medicine?
Father John's medicine is an effective cough suppressant used for coughs caused by influenza or the common virus, but will not relieve a cough caused by smoking or asthma.Dextromethorphan is available in many different brands. This leaflet does not list all the available brands. Father John's medicine can be used in other ways not mentioned in the medication guide.
Side effects of Father John's Medicine
If you experience difficulty breathing, hives or swelling on lips, face throat or tongue as symptoms of an allergy then seek medical advice immediately.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, stop using Father John’s Medicine immediately and contact your doctor.

Urination that is painful or difficult

Warnings
If you've taken an MAO inhibitor in the last 14 days (such as isocarboxazid or linezolid), do not take Father John's Medicine.
Before you take this drug
If you've used an MAO inhibitor in the last 14 days, don't use Father John's Medicine. A dangerous medication interaction may occur. The MAO inhibitors are isocarboxazid (linezolid), phenelzine (phenelzine injection), rasagiline (selegiline), methylene blue injection, and others. If you have an allergy to Father John's Medicine, then it is best not to use the medicine. If you are suffering from any health conditions, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether this medication is suitable for use. It is not recommended that a child under 12 years of age take Father John's medicine. Consult your doctor if you're pregnant or breastfeeding before taking this medication. The medicine you are taking may contain phenylalanine. If you have phenylketonuria, check the label of your medication.
How to take Father John’s Medicine?
Follow all directions listed on the packaging or those given by your physician when taking cold or cough medicine, taking only as needed until symptoms have cleared up. Measuring liquid medication accurately using dosing devices - spoons will not do. If symptoms continue for more than 7 days or worsen (headache, fever or rash). Informing them if taking Father John's Medicine during this time. Keep away from heat, moisture and light storage to maintain efficacy of therapy.
What happens if I miss the dose?
Your cough and cold medication might not fall on a schedule since you take it only when needed, so if it is almost time for another dose, skip any missed one and do not double up on two at once.
What happens if I overdose?
Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.
What should be avoided?
Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities until you have determined how Father John's medicine will affect you. You may be unable to react properly. Certain side effects can be exacerbated by alcohol consumption. Before using any over-the-counter medicines that contain similar ingredients to Father John’s Medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Interaction with other drug
This medicine should not be taken with any other medications that can cause you to fall asleep or have difficulty breathing. (For example, opioids, muscle relaxers, and medicines for anxiety or seizures.) Before using other medications, such as vitamins and herbs, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
