What is Emsam?

Emsam stops the breakdown of certain chemicals in the brain, which tend to be imbalanced in patients who suffer from depression.Emsam transdermal patches are utilized in the treatment of major depressive disorders in adolescents and adults with a minimum age of 12 years old.Emsam is also employed for other purposes that are not covered in this guideline for medication.

Side effects of Emsam

Contact a medical professional immediately.   • suddenly numbness or weakening (especially on an individual side);
  • issues with balance or speech;
  • Manic episodes: racing thoughts, higher energy levels, unusual risk-taking behaviors, extreme happiness, becoming uneasy or agitated

Take off your patch from the skin and get medical attention immediately if you experience symptoms of serotonin syndrome like agitation, hallucinations, and sweating. Other symptoms include fever or shivering, rapid heart rate, muscle stiffness, the loss of coordination, twitching, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Common side effects of Emsam include:

  • itching or redness in the area where the patch is worn;
  • headache;
  • diarrhoea, nausea, upset stomach, dry mouth, diarrhea;
  • sleep problems (insomnia);
  • It can be a rash
  • nasal pain or nasal stuffiness.

Warnings

It is not recommended to make use of the Emsam patch in the event that you suffer from an adrenal gland tumor or when you are taking certain other medications. Tyramine consumption while taking selegiline may increase your blood pressure to alarming levels and can cause life-threatening signs.

Before you take this drug

Do not take Emsam if you are allergic to selegiline or suffer from pheochromocytoma (a tumor in the adrenal gland).Certain medications can trigger undesirable or harmful consequences when combined with selegiline.your Your doctor may have to alter you treatment program if you have taken any of these medicines in the past two to five weeks:

  • carbamazepine;
  • dextromethorphan (cough medicine);

  • Citalopram, Clomipramine, Desvenlafaxine, Duloxetine, Fluoxetine, Imitpramine Milnacipran Paroxetine Sertraline Venlafaxine are examples of certain antidepressant medications--Cymbalta Effexor Savella Pristiq Prozac Zoloft etc - available.

To ensure that Emsam is safe for you, inform your doctor if you've ever experienced:

  • coronary heart diseases, hypertension;
  • seizures or epilepsy;
  • Bipolar disorder (manic depression) or suicide attempt

A few young people may have thoughts of suicide after first starting an antidepressant. Your doctor should be able to check your progress regularly. Family members and other caregivers should be on the lookout for changes in your symptoms or mood.It's not clear if this medication will affect an unborn child. It is possible that you will experience the possibility of relapses in depression if you stop taking your antidepressant. Inform your doctor immediately when you find yourself pregnant. Do not begin or end Emsam during your pregnancy without your physician's approval.It isn't known if selegiline gets into breast milk or if it is harmful to a nursing infant. Do not breastfeed when taking this medication, and for a minimum of 5 days after the last dose.Emsam is not a product that has been approved to be used by anyone younger than 12 years of age.

How to take Emsam?

Make sure to use Emsam patches in the exact manner directed by your doctor. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Your doctor might alter your dosage. Don't take this medication in smaller or larger quantities or for a longer period than the recommended time.Check all the information about your patient, including the medication guides and instructions sheets that you receive. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor for assistance if you have concerns.Place the patch on dry, clean, hairless skin on your back, chest, or thigh, or on the upper part of your arm. The patch should be firmly pressed into position. It is possible to leave the patch in place while showering, bathing, or in the pool. Pick a different area of your body and put the patch on every time you wear the new patch.Cleanse your hands using soap and water following the application of the patch and after taking it off.If an Emsam patch becomes loose and you can't get it back, try putting it back on. If it doesn't stick well, try putting on another patch and wearing it for the remainder of the wear time. Don't alter the removal timetable for your patch.Wear only 1 Emsam patch at the same time. Using extra skin patches won't increase the effectiveness of the medication. Don't cut skin patches. When wearing the patch, don't expose it to light or any other sources of heat, like heating pads, a heated blanket, a hot tub, or a sauna.

If you require surgery, be sure to inform your surgeon beforehand that you're using Emsam. It may be necessary to stop using the medication for a minimum of 10 days prior to the scheduled surgery. Don't stop taking Emsam without consulting your physician.The Emsam patch is applied to the skin at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Store each patch in the pouch made of foil until you're ready to apply the patch.Make sure to keep both unused and used Emsam skin patches away from children and pets. Selegiline content present in a skin patch could cause fetal harm to the pet or child who chews on the patch. Get medical attention immediately in the event of this.

Details on dosage

Usual Adult Dose of Emsam for Depression:

The first dose is to apply a transdermal patch containing 6 mg/24 hours to skin that is intact, once per 24 hours for 24 hours.
Maintenance dosage: 6 mg/24 hours up to a 12-mg/24-hour transdermal patch, applied to the skin at least once per day.
Maximum dose: 12 mg/24-hour transdermal patch that is applied to the skin at least once per day.
Comments:
The treatment for depression can take up to a year or more of continuous pharmacologic treatment.
If dose adjustments are needed, the adjustments should be made in increments of three mg per 24 hours at intervals of not less than 2 weeks.
The effect of antidepressants may be delayed.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Apply a patch to your skin immediately after you recall. Don't miss any missed doses if you are close to the time of the next dose scheduled. Don't use any extra patches to replace the dose you missed.

What happens if I overdose?

Get medical attention immediately, or contact the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222. The symptoms of an overdose may manifest within 12 hours of the overdose. They could worsen over the next 24 to 48 hours.The symptoms of an overdose can include intense headache hallucinations, fever, as well as clammy or cold skin, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, breathing problems, feeling anxious or angry muscles, twisting movements, unusual arching in your neck or back, and fainting. You may also experience seizures.

What should be avoided?

Do not drink alcohol when you're using Emsam.When you are using the 9 mg or 12-mg patches and for 14 days after stopping eating, you are not allowed to consume any food that is high in tyramine. These include:

  • meats that are air dried and are aged or fermented hams, salami or sausage (including mortadella and cacciatore), pickled herring, and any spoilt or improperly stored poultry, beef fish, liver, or
  • beer brewed from taps that hasn't been pasteurized;
  • aged cheeses that have been aged (such as blue Swiss cheese, cheddar Parmesan, and Romano cheese);
  • Over-the-counter medicines or cough and cold remedies that contain tyramine
    Sauerkraut, soy beans, soy sauce, tofu and fava beans can all make tasty snacks.
  • Extracts of yeast (such as marmite)

Consuming tyramine when you are taking selegiline could increase your blood pressure to levels that can result in life-threatening adverse effects. It is important to be acquainted with all the foods that you should not eat while you're taking Emsam 9-mg or 12-mg patches.The medication may affect your reactions or thinking. Be cautious if you drive or engage in any activity that requires you to stay aware.

Interaction with other drug

If you've taken fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), you must discontinue it for 5 weeks before beginning to use Emsam.A variety of drugs may interfere with selegiline, and certain drugs shouldn't be taken together. Inform your physician about your current medications and any that you are about to start or stop using, in particular:

  • buspirone (BuSpar);
  • Any other antidepressant,
  • cold or cough medicine that contains a decongestant, like phenylephrine as well as pseudoephedrine;
  • prescription or over-the-counter diet pills;
  • a dietary or herbal supplement that contains tyramine
  • stimulant medications like Adderall as well as other medications to treat ADHD. Other stimulant medicines include Adderall or other medications to treat ADHD.

This list isn't complete, and other medications may affect selegiline. This includes prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal remedies.
