What is Dytan-DM?

Dextromethorphan suppresses coughing. Diphenhydramine acts as an antihistamine. Phenylephrine works as a decongestant. Dytan-DM, a combination medication, is used to treat allergies, flu, common colds, or coughs caused by the flu. Dytan-DM is not effective for coughs caused by smoking or asthma. Dytan DM can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side Effects of Dytan-DM

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing, hives or swelling to face lips throat

This medicine can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Severe drowsiness;

  • Urination that is painful or difficult

  • Fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeats;

  • Trouble breathing

  • Confusion, anxiety, irritability, and tremors;

  • A seizure;

  • Problems with speech or balance

Dytan dm side effects may include:

  • Dizziness, drowsiness, headache;

  • Dry eyes and blurred vision;

  • Dry mouth, nose, or throat

  • upset stomach, nausea, vomiting;

  • Diarrhea, constipation;

  • Tiredness and trouble sleeping.

There may be other side effects. If experiencing side effects, contact your healthcare provider immediately; for reporting purposes contact 1-800-FDA-1088 to file.

Warnings

This medicine should not be taken if you've recently used any MAO inhibitor medication within 14 days, such as isocarboxazid or linezolid; other examples could include Methylene Blue injections, Phenelzine Rasagiline Selegiline etc. Adhere strictly to the instructions when taking diphenhydramine; an overdose could result in heart issues, seizures or even fatality.Never give this medication to children under 4 years of age. Before using any other medication that contains diphenhydramine, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Overdosing on this medication can be fatal.

Before you take this drug

You should not take this medication if you've taken an MAO-inhibitor in the last 14 days. Drug interactions can occur. MAO inhibitors are isocarboxazid (linezolid), methylene blue injection, phenelzine, and other drugs.

Have any of the following happened to you?

  • A cough that produces mucus

  • Urination or prostate problems;

  • High blood pressure, heart disease

  • Diabetes;

  • A thyroid disorder

  • Glaucoma;

  • A stomach ulcer.

This medication may contain phenylalanine.If you suffer from phenylketonuria, be sure to review your medication's labels carefully.Consult your doctor before taking this medication if you're pregnant or nursing.

How to take Dytan-DM?

Follow all directions outlined on your label or prescribed by your healthcare provider. Cold and cough remedies should only be taken for as long as necessary until symptoms have subsided.Don't take more than is recommended. Too much diphenhydramine may cause serious heart problems, seizures, or even death. Follow the directions on the label when giving this medicine to children. Do not use this medicine to put a child to sleep. Misuse of antihistamines can lead to death in very young children. Before giving medicine to children younger than four years, consult a physician. Measuring liquid medicine is important. Utilize either the provided dosing device or dose measurement tool (but not a spoon).If your symptoms don't improve within seven days or you experience fever, headache, cough or skin rash - consult your healthcare provider immediately.Tell your doctor or surgeon if you've taken this medication within the last few days if you are going to need medical testing or surgery.Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Dytan DM is only used as needed. You may not have a regular dosing regimen. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip any missed dose. Never take two doses in one go.

What happens if I overdose?

Call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical care. Overdoses can be deadly. Overdose symptoms include confusion, drowsiness, and ringing in the ears. Other symptoms are dry mouth and eyes, dilated pupils, rapid heartbeats, tremors, agitation, or hallucinations.

What should be avoided?

Before engaging in hazardous activities or driving under the influence of medicine, make sure you know its effects. Otherwise you could find it hard to react as expected and might end up injured or unconscious. Before using any medication containing diphenhydramine, always consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist first. Diphenhydramine-containing medication may help alleviate sleeping disorders, allergy symptoms or skin itch. Too much diphenhydramine could result in overdose - too much diphenhydramine could have serious adverse consequences! Alcohol consumption can have side effects when taken with this medication.

Interaction with other drug

Before taking Dytan DM with other medications, always speak to a healthcare provider or pharmacist first. This is particularly crucial if taking sleep aids such as opioids, muscle relaxants or seizure medications which could induce drowsiness - for instance sleep medication, opioids muscle relaxants anxiety medicines seizure medicines etc. Informing them also of any new or altered usage; including nonprescription and prescription medicines as well as vitamins or herbal products which might interact.
