What is Duravent DM?

Dextromethorphan suppresses coughing by affecting the brain signals that trigger the cough reflex. Guaifenesin loosens up congestion in the chest and throat. Phenylephrine shrinks the blood vessels in the nasal passages. Duravent DM, a combination medication, is used to treat allergies, flu, common colds, or coughs caused by the flu. Duravent DM does not treat a cough caused by smoking or asthma. This medicine is available in many different brands and forms. This leaflet does not list all brands. Duravent DM can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side Effects of Duravent DM

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat.

This medicine can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Little or no urination
  • Fast or slow heartbeats
  • Confusion, dizziness, and feeling unsteady;
  • Nervousness; sleep problems (insomnia);
  • Severe nausea or vomiting;
  • A severe headache can cause blurred vision or a pounding sensation in the neck, ears, or head.
  • Slow breathing
  • Unusual changes in mood or behavior

Duravent DM side effects may include:

  • Diarrhea, constipation;
  • Dizziness, drowsiness;
  • Sleep problems (insomnia);
  • Feeling nervous, restless, or irritable.

Warnings

This medicine should not be used if you've taken an MAO-inhibitor in the last 14 days. Examples include isocarboxazid (linezolid), phenelzine (phenelzine), rasagiline (selegiline), and tranylcypromine.

Before you take this drug

This medicine should not be used if you have an allergy to dextromethorphan or phenylephrine.

You should not take this medication if you've taken an MAO-inhibitor in the last 14 days. A dangerous drug-drug interaction may occur. MAO inhibitors are isocarboxazid (linezolid), phenelzine (rasagiline), selegiline (tranylcypromine), and rasagiline.

If you suffer from:

  • High blood pressure, heart disease
  • Diabetes;
  • A thyroid disorder
  • Urination problems
  • Glaucoma;
  • Epilepsy or another seizure disorder
  • Pheochromocytoma
  • Chronic bronchitis or emphysema can cause a cough that is mucus-laden.

This medication may contain phenylalanine. If you have phenylketonuria, check the label of your medication. Consult your doctor before taking this medication if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

How to take Duravent DM?

Follow the directions on the label or those prescribed by your physician. Cold and cough medicines are only to be used for a short time until symptoms have cleared up. Follow the directions on the label when giving cough medicine or cold medicine. Never use cough and cold medicine to put a child to sleep. Do not chew or crush a tablet. Swallow the entire tablet. Measuring liquid medicine is important. Use the provided dosing device or a dose-measuring tool (not a spoon).While taking this medication, drink extra fluids in order to loosen congestion and lubricate the throat. If your symptoms don't improve within 7 days or you experience a headache, fever, or rash, call your doctor. Tell your doctor or surgeon if you've taken this medication within the last few days if you are going to need medical testing or surgery. Store away from moisture or heat at room temperature. Liquid medicines should not be allowed to freeze.

What happens if I miss the dose?

You may not have a schedule for your cough and cold medication, as you only use it when necessary. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip any missed dose. Never take two doses in one go.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities until you have determined how the medicine will affect you. You may be unable to react properly. Certain side effects can be exacerbated by alcohol consumption. Before using any other cold or cough medicines, ask your doctor or pharmacist if they contain similar ingredients.

Interaction with other drug

Duravent DM should not be taken with any other medications that can cause drowsiness, slow breathing, or sedation (such as muscle relaxants, opioid medicine, medicine for anxiety, or medication to treat seizures). Before taking any other medications, such as vitamins, herbal products, prescription medicines, or over-the-counter medicines, you should consult your doctor.
