What is Docusate and senna?

Docusate softens stools. Senna works as a laxative. Docusate and Senna are effective combination medications used to treat constipation. This medication guide does not list all possible uses for Docusate or Senna.

Side effects of Docusate and Senna

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat.

Docusate and Senna can cause serious side effects. Docusate or senna should be stopped immediately, and you should consult your doctor if:

  • Rectal bleeding
  • Severe stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting;
  • No bowel movement.

Docusate or senna can cause side effects such as:

  • Gas, bloating;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Mild nausea

Before you take this drug

Do not use docusate if you are allergic to it or if you are taking mineral oils.

Have any of the following taken place in their life:

  • Nausea or vomiting;
  • Stomach pain;
  • An abrupt shift in bowel habits that lasts two weeks or longer.
  • An intestinal disorder such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis

Consult your doctor before taking this medication if you're pregnant or nursing. This medicine should not be given to children younger than 2 without consulting a doctor.

How to take Docusate and senna?

Follow the instructions on the label or those prescribed by your doctor. Docusate or senna should be taken with water. Take this medication at night or before you go to bed. You should have a bowel motion within 6–12 hours after taking Docusate with Senna. Take docusate or senna no longer than seven days in a row, unless you are told to by your doctor. If your constipation doesn't improve after using docusate or senna, call your doctor. Store in an environment free from heat and moisture at room temperature.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for constipation: acute
Orally, take 2 to 4 tablets daily, divided into two or four doses. Preferably in the evening.
The Usual Pediatric Dose of Constipation—Acute:
From 2 to 6 years old: 1 tablet per day.
From 6 to 12 years: Take 1 to 2 tablets daily.

What happens if I miss the dose?

You may not have a schedule for docusate or senna, as they are used only when necessary. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip any missed dose. Never take two doses in one go.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. The symptoms of an overdose can include nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain.

What should be avoided?

Before using any laxative or stool softener containing ingredients that are similar to those in docusate and senna, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Interaction with other drug

Docusate or senna may be affected by other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal products. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are currently taking and those that you will begin or stop using.
