Cisplatin

Generic Name: Cisplatin [siss-platin]
Brand names: Platinol, AQ Platinol (restricted access), Kemoplat
Dosage Forms: intravenous powder for injection (50 mg), intravenous solution (1 mg/ml).
Drug class: alkylating agents

What is Cisplatin?

Cisplatin can be used in combination with other cancer drugs for the treatment of bladder carcinoma or testicular tumours.Cisplatin can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Cisplatin

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention: hives, rapid heartbeats, lightheadedness, wheezing or difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, throat, tongue, or mouth.It is possible to have an allergic reaction after receiving a cisplatin shot. If this happens, your carers will treat you immediately.

Cisplatin can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Severe or persistent nausea and vomiting
  • Vision problems can cause pain behind the eyes.
  • Hearing problems and ringing sounds in the ears
  • Pain, swelling, or changes in the skin where the injection has been give
  • At first sign, symptoms associated with bone marrow suppression include dizziness, pale lips or fingernail beds, fast heart rate, easy fatigue or shortness of breath;
  • Kidney problems: little or no urine, swelling of the feet or ankles, and feeling tired or breathless;
  • Low white blood cell count—fevers, sore throats, sore mouths, skin sores, or difficulty breathing
  • Nervous system problems: numbness, tingling, and burning pains in the hands or feet

It is possible that you may experience nervous system problems up to several months after receiving cisplatin. These effects may be irreversible. Address any concerns to your doctor immediately.Older adults are more susceptible to nervous system disorders.Should any side effects appear during cancer therapy, its progress could be interrupted or postponed.Cisplatin can cause a variety of side effects.

  • Hearing problems
  • Kidney problems;
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Nausea, vomiting,
  • Bone marrow suppression is the removal of bone marrow.

Warnings

Cisplatin may affect your nervous system or increase your risk of infection or bleeding. It can also harm your kidneys.If you experience a fever or have mouth sores or sores on your lips, sores or sores on your throat, unusual bleeding, bruising or hearing problems, numbness in your feet or hands, no or little urination, swelling, rapid weight gain, or shortness, call your doctor.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to cisplatin, it is not recommended that you receive treatment.

Inform your physician of any of the following issues:

  • Prior treatment with cisplatin
  • Hearing or vision problems
  • Bone marrow suppression
  • Kidney disease
  • Peripheral arterial disease, such as Raynaud syndrome.
  • Radiation treatment for your brain
  • Liver disease
  • If you've had an allergic reaction to cancer drugs like carboplatin and oxaliplatin,

Before the child receives their first dose of cisplatin, a hearing examination may be required.The use of cisplatin can increase your risk of leukemia. Your doctor can tell you about your personal risk.If either the mother or father uses cisplatin, it can cause harm to an unborn child.

  • Women should not take cisplatin while pregnant. Before starting treatment, you may need to take a pregnancy test. Use birth control while taking this medication and for 14 months following your last dose.
  • Use effective birth control if you are male and your partner can become pregnant. Continue to use birth control at least 11 months after your last pill.
  • If you become pregnant while using cisplatin, tell your doctor immediately.

Men and women may both benefit from taking this medication. It is still important to use birth control to avoid pregnancy, as cisplatin may harm the unborn child.Breast-feeding is not recommended while taking cisplatin.

How to take Cisplatin?

Cisplatin can be infused into a vein. This injection will be given by a healthcare provider.Cisplatin can be given for 5 days in a row or every 3–4 weeks. The type of cancer that you have will determine how often you are given cisplatin.Other medications may be prescribed to prevent allergic reactions or serious side effects. Continue to use these medications as prescribed by your doctor.If you experience any pain or swelling when the cisplatin IV needle is inserted, tell your carers.Cisplatin increases your risk of bleeding and infection. You will be required to undergo frequent medical testing. The results of your tests may delay cancer treatment.Cisplatin may harm your kidneys. Keep your kidneys healthy by drinking plenty of water every day.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for testicular cancer:

In combination with approved chemotherapy agents, 20 mg/m2 per day by slow IV infusion for five days per cycle

On Day 1, slowly infusing 75–100 mg/m2 every 3–4 weeks by IV slow infusion

For patients who have been heavily treated, a 50–70 mg/m2 slow IV infusion is recommended every 3–4 weeks.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you forget your appointment to receive your cisplatin, call your doctor.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.The symptoms of an overdose can include fatigue, nausea, pain, numbness, or liver or renal failure.

What should be avoided?

Avoid being around people who are sick. If you notice any signs of an infection, tell your doctor immediately.Avoid any activities that could increase your risk of injury or bleeding. Take extra precautions to avoid bleeding when shaving or brushing your teeth.

Interaction with other drug

Cisplatin may harm your kidneys if you are also taking certain medications for cancer, osteoporosis, organ transplant rejection, bowel disorders, high blood pressure, or pain (including Advil, Motrin, and Aleve).Other drugs, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products, may also affect cisplatin. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are currently taking and those that you have started or stopped using.
