What is Chlordiazepoxide and clidinium?

Chlordiazepoxide is a benzodiazepine (ben-zoe-dye-AZE-eh-peen). Clidinium decreases stomach acid and intestinal spasms.Combination medicine with chlordiazepoxide and clidinium may help treat emotional distress due to stomach disorders (such as ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, or intestinal infections). Other medications may also be employed for treatment purposes.This medication guide does not list all possible uses of chlordiazepoxide or clidinium.

Side effects of Chlordiazepoxide and clidinium

Symptoms of allergic reaction that should prompt medical assistance immediately include hives, difficulty breathing and swelling of lips, face, tongue or throat.Chlordiazepoxide or clidinium may slow or stop breathing, particularly if you've recently consumed alcohol or an opioid drug. If there are long pauses between breaths or blue lips and it becomes hard for someone to wake you, immediate medical assistance should be sought by anyone caring for you.

Chlordiazepoxide or clidinium can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Severe sleepiness;
  • Slow heartbeat; slow breathing (breathing can stop);
  • A seizure;
  • Memory or concentration problems;
  • Unusual mood and behaviour changes; thoughts of suicide or harming oneself
  • Problems with muscle or balance movement
  • Confusion, paranoia, anger, aggression,
  • Stomach pain and loss of appetite

Older adults may experience prolonged fatigue and dizziness. Avoid falling or causing an accident.

Some of the common side effects associated with chlordiazepoxide or clidinium include:

  • Dry Mouth
  • Blurred vision
  • Constipation, nausea;
  • Urination problems
  • Confusion, sleepiness, and loss of coordination
  • Rash;;
  • Swelling;
  • Menstrual irregularities;
  • Increased or decreased interest in sexual activity.

If you experience any of the following symptoms after stopping chlordiazepoxide or clidinium: abnormal muscle movements, increased activity or talkativeness, sudden and severe mood or behavioural changes, confusion, hallucinations or Should seizures or suicidal thoughts or actions arise, seek medical assistance immediately.Some withdrawal symptoms can last for up to 12 or more months after abruptly stopping the medicine. If you experience persistent anxiety, depressive symptoms, or problems with memory, thinking, or sleeping, tell your doctor.There may be other side effects. Chlordiazepoxide may slow or stop breathing, particularly if you've recently taken an opioid or consumed alcohol.Misusing this medication may result in addiction, overdosage and possibly death. This medicine should be kept out of the reach of others.Stopping this medication without consulting your doctor is not recommended. If you suddenly stop taking the medication after long-term use, you may experience life-threatening symptoms. Some withdrawal symptoms may persist for as long as one year or even beyond that point.Seek medical attention immediately if you experience symptoms like abnormal muscle movements, increased activity or talkativeness, sudden and severe mood or behavioural changes, confusion, hallucinations or seizures, or thoughts of suicide.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to chlordiazepoxide, clidinium, or both:

  • Glaucoma;
  • An enlarged prostrate
  • An obstruction or any urination issue should not occur.

Inform your physician of any of the following issues:

  • Eye problems
  • Urination problems
  • Bleeding problems
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Drug or alcohol abuse;
  • Depression, mental illness, or suicidal ideas

Informing your physician of any pregnancy or plans to become pregnant is extremely important. Unborn babies can be harmed by chlordiazepoxide or clidinium. Do not take this medication during the first three months of pregnancy.A doctor can tell you if breastfeeding is safe while taking this medication. Chlordiazepoxide, clidinium, and other medicines can reduce breast milk production.No one under the age of 18 is allowed to use this product.

How to take Chlordiazepoxide and clidinium?

Read all instructions or medication guides and follow the instructions on your prescription label. Do not use more medicine or longer than recommended. If you are feeling a greater urge to take this medicine, tell your doctor.Do not share this medication with anyone, especially if they have a history of addiction to drugs. The medicine should be kept out of reach of others. It is illegal to sell or give away this medicine.Take clidinium and chlordiazepoxide before eating and at night. Please follow your doctor's directions.If your symptoms don't improve or worsen, call your doctor.Stopping this medication without consulting your doctor is not recommended. If you suddenly stop taking the medication after a long period of use, you may experience life-threatening symptoms.Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature. Store your medication in a safe place so that no one else can misuse it.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical care. A chlordiazepoxide or clidinium overdose can be fatal when taken with alcohol, opioid medicines, or other drugs that cause drowsiness and slow breathing.Overdose symptoms include confusion, muscle weakness, or loss of consciousness.

What should be avoided?

Don't drink alcohol. Side effects and death can occur.Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities until you have a better understanding of how chlordiazepoxide (clidinium) will affect you. Dizziness and drowsiness may cause accidents or serious injuries.

Interaction with other drug

Do not take this medication with any other drug that makes you sleepy, slows your breathing, or is used to treat anxiety or seizures.

Tell your doctor what other medications you are taking, including:

  • Medicine to treat a mental illness; promethazine, thioridazine, and others;
  • An MAO inhibitor—isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, and others.
