What are Ceftolozane and tazobactam?

Ceftolozane-tazobactam, a combination antibacterial, is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the lungs or stomach. Ceftolozane tazobactam can be given with other antibiotics. Ceftolozane or tazobactam can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Ceftolozane and tazobactam

If you experience symptoms indicative of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing and swelling in your lips, face, tongue or throat - seek medical assistance immediately!

Ceftolozane or tazobactam can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Severe stomach pain;
  • Watery or bleeding diarrhoea (even months after the last dose);
  • If you suspect kidney issues, symptoms could include less-than-frequent urine output or swelling of feet and ankles; fatigue could also be an indicator.
  • Brain bleeding symptoms include sudden numbness, weakness, or problems with speech or vision.

Older adults may experience more side effects.

Side effects of ceftolozane or tazobactam include:

  • Nausea, diarrhoea;
  • Headache;
  • Fever;
  • Kidney problems;
  • Abnormal liver function tests

Before you take this drug

Ceftolozane and tazobactam should not be used if the user is allergic to these antibiotics.

  • Penicillin antibiotics include amoxicillin, ampicillin, dicloxacillin oxacillin penicillinase ticarcillin amoxatag Augmentin Principen and others;
  • Cephalosporin antibiotics: cefdinir, cefprozil, cefuroxime, cephalexin, ceftin, cefzil, Keflex, Omnicef, and others.

Inform your doctor immediately of any of the following issues:

  • Kidney disease (or dialysis)

Inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant or nursing.

How to take Ceftolozane and tazobactam?

Read and follow any instructions or guides included with your medication.Follow the instructions on the label. The treatment can last up to 14 consecutive days, depending on the type of infection that is being treated. Ceftolozane is given by infusion through a vein. Your healthcare provider may give you your first dose and teach you how to use the medication properly. Please read and follow all directions that accompany your medication carefully, if there are any that you don't understand consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist immediately for clarification. If in any way they remain unclear ask a doctor or pharmacist directly.

Only prepare an injection when it is time to give it.If the colour of your medicine has changed or if it contains particles, do not use it. For new medication, call your pharmacist. Ceftolozane or tazobactam should be diluted in a liquid first and then diluted further with another liquid before being placed into an IV bag. If you are using the injections yourself, make sure that you know how to mix and store them.

Even if your symptoms quickly improve, continue taking this medication until all prescribed time has elapsed.You can get an infection resistant to the medication if you skip doses. Ceftolozane or tazobactam do not treat viral infections such as influenza and the common cold. Ceftolozane powder and tazobactam, unmixed, should be stored in the refrigerator. Keep away from the light.

Store the mixture at room temperature for up to an hour after mixing the powder and the first diluent. Then, mix it further into the IV bag. If you store the medicine in an IV bag at room temperature for 24 hours, it must be used within 7 days. Toss out any mixture that is not used within the specified time frame. Don't freeze unmixed or mixed medicine.

Each vial is only for one-time use. After one use, throw it out, even if the medicine is still inside. Only use a needle or syringe once, and then store them in a "sharps container" that is puncture-proof. Be sure to follow local or state laws on how to properly dispose of the container. Keep the container out of reach of pets and children.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you forget to take your ceftolozane or tazobactam, call your doctor.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

Antibiotics can cause diarrhea. This could be an indication of a new illness. Call your doctor if you have bloody or watery diarrhoea before taking anti-diarrhoea medication.

Interaction with other drug

Ceftolozane or tazobactam may be affected by other drugs, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are currently taking and those that you will begin or stop using.
