What is Cefotetan?
Cefotetan (SEF) is a low-sporin antibacterial. Cefotetan can be used to treat a wide range of bacteria-caused infections. Cefotetan can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.
Side effects of Cefotetan
Symptoms of an allergic reaction could include hives, difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling or severe reactions on your skin.(fever or sore throat with burning eyes, skin pain or blistering, or a red or purple rash), seek emergency medical attention.
Cefotetan may cause serious side effects. If you experience:
- Severe stomach pain; bloody or watery diarrhoea (even months after the last dose);
- Flu symptoms typically include fever, chills and body aches.
- Pale skin, easy bruising, and unusual bleeding
- A seizure;
- Fever, weakness, confusion;
- Dark-coloured urine jaundice
- Kidney problems include little or no urination and swelling of the feet or ankles. You may also feel tired or short of breath.
Some of the common side effects associated with cefotetan include:
- Nausea, vomiting;
- Diarrhoea;
- Vaginal itching or discharge

Before you take this drug
This medicine should not be taken if you have an allergy to cefotetan or any other cephalosporin (cefdinir, cefalexin, Keflex Omnicef, and others)
Notify your doctor of any of the following conditions:
- An allergic reaction to any medication (especially penicillin);
- Colitis is one example of an intestinal disorder.
- Kidney disease is a serious condition.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing.
How to take Cefotetan
Read all instructions or guides that come with your medicine and follow all directions. Follow the directions on the label. Cefotetan can be injected directly into the muscle or infused into a vein. An healthcare provider will show you how to administer medication correctly on your own. Please read and adhere to all directions included with your medication. If there are any difficulties understanding them, consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist immediately for clarification. Cefotetan may need to be mixed with a liquid before use. Only use the diluent that your doctor recommends.
You will need to take your medicine within a few hours or days after mixing it. The diluent you use and the way you store your mixture (at room temperature, in the refrigerator, or frozen) will determine how long it takes to mix. When administering injections yourself, be sure to know how to combine and store them correctly. If you have any questions, ask your pharmacist. If the medicine is cloudy, has changed colour, or contains particles, do not use it. For new medicine, call your pharmacist.
Cefotetan should be taken for the entire prescribed time period, even if you feel better quickly. You can get infections resistant to medications if you skip doses. Cefotetan does not treat viruses such as the flu and the common cold. You may only receive one dose if you're receiving this medication before an operation in order to prevent infection. Blood tests may be required frequently.
Only use a needle or syringe once, and then store them in a "sharps container" that is puncture-proof. Be sure to follow local or state laws on how to properly dispose of the container. Keep the container out of reach of pets and children. Cefotetan can interfere with certain medical tests. Inform any doctor that you see about your use of cefotetan.
Cefotetan, unmixed, should be stored at room temperature away from moisture, light, and heat. Do not freeze. If you received your medicine in a frozen state or if it was frozen even after being mixed, defrost it in the refrigerator or at ambient temperature. Warm the medicine in a microwave oven or with boiling water. After use, do not refreeze your medicine.
What happens if I miss the dose?
If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.
What happens if I overdose?

What should be avoided?
If you drink alcohol within 72 hours of using cefotetan, it can cause side effects like headaches and sweating. Rapid heart rate. Antibiotics can cause diarrhea. This could be an indication of a new illness. Call your doctor if you have bloody or watery diarrhoea before taking anti-diarrhoea medication.
Interaction with other drug
Inform your doctor of all other medications you are taking, including any other antibiotics. Cefotetan can be affected by other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal products. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are taking and those that you stop or start using.
