What is Caffeine citrate (injection/oral liquid)?

This medication guide contains information on Cafcit oral liquid and injection forms of caffeine citrate. This medication guide does not cover other forms of caffeine used to increase alertness. The use of caffeine citrate oral liquid or injection (Cafcit) to treat premature infants with breathing problems is recommended. This medication guide does not list all possible uses for caffeine citrate oral liquid or injection.

Side effects of Caffeine citrate (injection/oral liquid)

If your child shows any of these symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention.

If your child is suffering from:

  • Restlessness, jitteriness, or shakiness
  • Fast heartbeats;
  • More wet diapers are needed than usual.
  • Vomiting, stomach bloating;
  • Blood in the stool;
  • Weakness; drowsiness
  • Fever, chills, and rapid breathing

Some of the common side effects associated with caffeine citrate include:

  • Feeding problems or other issues
  • Skin .

Before you take this drug

Cafcit shouldn't be given to an allergic child.

If your child has experienced any of the following:

  • Liver or kidney disease

How to take Caffeine citrate (injection/oral liquid)?

Read all of the directions that accompany your medication carefully and follow them precisely. Sometimes, your doctor will change the dose for your child. Follow the instructions on the medication. Cafcit should only be used for a short time. Caffeine citrate should not be used for more than 12 days, unless your doctor has prescribed it. Cafcit is taken orally. An infusion of caffeine citrate is administered as an injection into a vein. Your child will receive this injection from a healthcare provider. Dose liquid medication carefully. Only use the provided dosing syringe. Only give the medication in the amount prescribed by your doctor. (ml and Cc are both equal measurements.) Cafcit liquid oral can be administered through a feeding device. Please read and follow all instructions for use that come with your medication.If the instructions don't make sense to you, speak to either your physician or pharmacist immediately. Do not change the time you give the oral liquid. If the liquid is cloudy, changes colour, or contains particles, do not use it. For new medications, call your pharmacist. The doses of Cafcit, or liquid, are determined by weight. If your child loses or gains weight, the dose may need to be adjusted. Do not alter your baby's dosage without consulting your doctor first.Your child may need to undergo frequent medical testing.If your baby's symptoms of apnea do not improve, call your doctor immediately. Cafcit contains no preservatives. Do not open the bottle until you're ready to administer the dose. Cafcit Oral Liquid is only intended for one-time use. After one use, throw it out, even if the medicine is still inside. Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

Details on dosage

Usual Paediatric Dosage for Apnea in Prematurity:

Caffeine Citrate:
Gestational Age: 28–33 Weeks:
loading dose: 20 mg/kg intravenously over 30 minutes.
Maintenance Dose: Orally or intravenously, 5 mg/kg every 24 hours.
Treatment Duration: The safety and efficacy of the treatment of prematurity apnea have not been established after 12 days.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you forgot to give your child the dose of caffeine citrate liquid, call your doctor. Your child will not miss a dose because the injection of caffeine citrate is administered in a clinic setting.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting, anxiety, rapid breathing, and abnormal blood tests.

What should be avoided?

Avoid giving your child drinks or foods that contain caffeine, such as chocolate milk or cola.

Interaction with other drug

Inform your doctor of all the other medications you have given the child. Other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal products, may also affect caffeine citrate. Inform your doctor of all the medicines your child is taking, including any new ones.
