What is Cafcit?

This medication guide contains information on Cafcit, an injection of caffeine citrate. This medication guide does not cover other forms of caffeine citrate used to increase alertness. The use of Cafcit liquid or injection (Cafcit) is to treat premature infants with breathing problems.This medication guide does not list all possible uses for Cafcit oral liquid or injection.

Side effects of Cafcit

If your child shows any of these symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention.

If your child is suffering from:

  • Restlessness, jitteriness, or shakiness
  • Fast heartbeats;
  • More wet diapers are needed than usual.
  • Vomiting, stomach bloating;
  • Blood in the stool;
  • Weakness; or
  • Fever, chills, and rapid breathing

Cafcit side effects may include:

  • Feeding problems or other issues
  • Skin .

Warnings

Please read all the instructions on the label or package of your medication. Inform your child's doctor about any medical conditions or allergies that the child may have, as well as all medications given to them.

Before you take this drug

Cafcit shouldn't be given to an allergic child.

If your child has experienced any of the following:

  • Seizures;
  • Heart problems
  • Liver or kidney disease

Inform your doctor if caffeine was consumed during pregnancy. Infants who are treated with Cafcit can develop necrotizing enterocolitis. This is a condition in which a part of the bowel becomes dead. Discuss this matter with their physician.

How to take Cafcit?

Read and follow all instructions included with your medication. Sometimes, your doctor will change the dose for your child. Follow the instructions on the medication. Cafcit should only be used for a short time. Cafcit should not be used for more than 12 days, unless your doctor has prescribed it. Cafcit is taken orally.An infusion of Cafcit is administered into a vein. Your child will receive this injection from a healthcare provider.Dose liquid medication carefully. Only use the provided dosing syringe. Only give the medication in the amount prescribed by your doctor. (ml and Cc are both equal measurements.) Cafcit liquid oral can be administered through a feeding device.Please read and follow all instructions for use that come with your medication. If the instructions don't make sense to you, seek guidance from either your physician or pharmacist. Do not change the time you give the oral liquid.  If the liquid is cloudy, changes colour, or contains particles, do not use it. For new medications, call your pharmacist. The doses of Cafcit, or liquid, are determined by weight. If your child loses or gains weight, the dose may need to be adjusted. Do not alter your baby's dosage without consulting your doctor first. Your child may need to undergo frequent medical testing.If your baby's symptoms of apnea do not improve, call your doctor immediately. Cafcit contains no preservatives. Do not open the bottle until you're ready to administer the dose. Cafcit Oral Liquid is only intended for a single use. After one use, throw it out, even if the medicine is still inside.Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you forgot to give Cafcit or liquid to your child, call your doctor. Cafcit is administered in a clinic setting, so your child will not miss a dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Dial 1-800-222-1222 immediately or seek medical help immediately if poison is suspected, to get assistance for potential exposure or intoxication. Overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting, rapid breathing, and abnormal blood tests.

What should be avoided?

Avoid giving your child drinks or foods that contain caffeine, such as chocolate milk or cola.

Interaction with other drug

Inform your doctor of all the other medications you have given the child. Cafcit may be affected by other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal remedies.Informing your physician of all medications your child is currently taking - including any that are new - is very important.
