What is Armour Thyroid?

The desireccated (dried) thyroid can be described as a mixture of hormones that are produced by the thyroid gland in order to regulate your body's metabolism and energy levels. Desiccated thyroid is prescribed when the thyroid is unable to produce enough hormone on its own.Desiccated thyroid helps treat the condition of hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). Desiccated thyroid can also be employed to help treat and prevent goitre (enlarged thyroid gland), as well as being used as a part of medical examinations for thyroid disorders.Desiccated thyroids shouldn't be employed to treat weight gain or weight issues.Desiccated thyroid could be utilised for other purposes not covered in this medication guide.

Warnings

It is possible that you will not be able to use Armour Thyroid when you suffer from a thyroid disorder known as thyrotoxicosis or a problem with your adrenal gland that cannot be controlled with treatment.Consult your physician if you notice symptoms of thyroid toxicity like chest pain, pounding or fast heartbeats, and feeling hot or anxious, as well as being sweaty more than normal.

Before you take this drug

Since thyroid hormone is naturally produced in the body, virtually everybody can take desiccated thyroid. However, you might not be able to use this drug if you suffer from an illness that causes thyroid dysfunction called thyrotoxicosis or an adrenal gland issue that isn't controlled by treatment.

To make sure that desiccated thyroid is appropriate for you, consult your physician if you are:

  • Heart disease, angina (chest pain);
  • Coronary arteriac disease;
  • Congestive heart failure;
  • Any kind of diabetes
  • Issues in the adrenal gland.

Desiccated thyroid should not be thought to harm the unborn child; however, the dose you take could differ in the course of pregnancy. Talk to your doctor if you are expecting while you are taking the medication.Desiccated thyroid in small amounts could be found in the milk of a nursing baby, but it isn't expected to cause harm to the baby who is nursing. But you should not take this medication without consulting your doctor if you are nursing babies.

How to take Armour Thyroid?

Follow the instructions on the prescription label. Your doctor may change your dosage to ensure you receive the most effective results. Avoid using armour thyroid in larger or smaller quantities or for longer than suggested.If you use desiccated thyroid, you might require regular blood tests.Use this medicine only as prescribed, even if you are not feeling well. It is possible that you will need to take thyroid medications for the remainder of your life.Contact your doctor if you observe any indications of thyroid toxicity, like chest pain, quick or beating heartbeats, feeling uncomfortable or anxious, or sweating more frequently than normal.If you are in need of surgery, be sure to inform the surgeon in advance that you have a desiccated thyroid. It is possible that you will need to stop taking the medication for a brief period of time.Place it in a cool, dry place free of heat and moisture.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Do the dose you missed as quickly as you can remember. Avoid any missed doses if you are nearing the time for the next dose. Don't take any extra medication to make up for the missed dose.

Get medical attention in an emergency or contact the poison help line at 1-800-222-1222.

What should be avoided?

If you are also taking cholestyramine (Prevalite, Questran) or colestipol (Colestid), do not take these drugs within 4 hours prior to or following the time you take desiccated thyroid.Be sure to avoid taking antacids within 4 hours prior to or after taking desiccated thyroid. Certain antacids may make it difficult for the body's ability to absorb the desiccated thyroid.

Interaction with other drug

Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking as well as the ones you begin or stop using in your treatment with desiccated thyroid, particularly:

  • Birth control pills and hormone therapy
  • A blood thinner, such as warfarin, coumadin, or jantoven;
  • Insulin or diabetes medication that you are taking by mouth
  • Medicines that contain iodine (such as i-131);
  • Salicylates like aspirin, nuprin backache caplet kaopectate kneerelief, pamprin cramp formula, pepto-bismol, tricosal, trilisate,
  • Steroids like prednisone and other steroids
