What is Zomig?
Zomig is a medicine for headaches that reduces blood vessels in the brain. Zolmitriptan also decreases the amount of substances that can cause headaches, nausea, sensitivity to sounds and light, and other migraine-related symptoms.Zomig is a treatment for migraine headaches in adults.Zomig is only used to help with headaches that have already started. It won't stop headaches from occurring or decrease their severity.
Zomig is not recommended for treating a typical tension headache, one that results in loss of motion on the opposite or other side, or any other headache that appears to be different from regular migraine headaches. Take this medication only in cases where your condition is confirmed by a medical professional for migraine-related headaches.
Warnings
Zomig should not be used when you suffer from uncontrolled high blood pressure, cardiac issues, certain heart rhythm issues, an underlying history of stroke or heart attack, or circulatory problems that result in the body not having enough blood flow.Don't use Zomig if you have taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 14 days, including linezolid and isocarboxazid, as well as Methylene Blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine.
Do not consume Zomig within 24 hours prior to or after taking another medication for migraine, such as the nasal spray zolmitriptan (Axert) or eletriptan (Relpax), frovatriptan (Frova), naratriptan (Amerge), rizatriptan (Maxalt, Maxalt-MLT), sumatriptan (Imitrex or Treximet), or ergot medication like ergotamine (Ergomar, Cafergot, Migergot), dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45), Migranal), as well as methylergonovine (Methergine).
Inform your physician if you're taking any antidepressants such as citalopram (Celexa), desvenlafaxine (Pristiq), duloxetine (Cymbalta), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluvoxamine (Prozac Sarafem, Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), and venlafaxine (Effexor).Zomig can only be used to treat headaches that have already started. It cannot stop headaches from occurring or decrease the frequency of attacks.
After having taken a Zomig tablet, you should rest for 2 (2) minutes before taking another tablet. Don't take more than 10 mg of zolmitriptan within 24 hours.

Before you take this drug
It is not recommended to take Zomig if you have an allergy to zolmitriptan or are suffering from:
- Coronary heart disease, angina (chest pain), or blood circulation problems in the absence of the heart with blood;
- A background of heart diseases, heart attacks, or strokes, such as "mini-strokes";
- Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome;
- Uncontrolled or severe high blood pressure
- A blood vessel disorder or circulation issue that results in the body having a shortage of blood in the body.
- A headache that is like a migraine that is different from your normal ones.
Don't take Zomig if you have taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 14 days. A potentially dangerous interaction between drugs could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, Methylene Blue injection, rasagiline, phenelzine, and tranylcypromine, among others.
To ensure that Zomig is suitable for you, inform your doctor that you suffer from:
- Heart illness or high blood pressure or irregular heartbeats;
- Epilepsy or seizures;
- Kidney or liver disease;
- An illness for which you are prescribed the drug cimetidine (Tagamet)
- Coronary heart condition (or risk factors like menopause, diabetes, smoking, being overweight, having high cholesterol, having an ancestral background of coronary diseases, being over 40 years old, being a male or female who underwent an operation to remove her uterus)
Zomig disintegrating tablets could contain the chemical phenylalanine. Discuss this with your doctor prior to taking this type of zolmitriptan in case you suffer from the condition known as phenylketonuria (PKU).
It isn't known if this medicine could cause harm to a baby who is not yet born. Inform your doctor if you are expecting or planning to be pregnant.
It is unclear if the zolmitriptan is absorbed into breast milk or whether it can harm breastfeeding babies. Consult your physician if you are breastfeeding a baby.Zomig is not a product that has been approved for use by anyone less than 18 years of age.
How to take Zomig?
You should take Zomig exactly as directed by your physician. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Your doctor might alter the dosage to ensure you receive the most effective outcomes. Don't take this medication in smaller or larger quantities or for longer periods than the recommended time.Utilize Zomig immediately when you start to feel migraine-like symptoms.Take the normal tablet with a full glass of water.
To consume the oral dissolving tablet (Zomig-ZMT):
- Place the tablet in the blister package until you're ready to take it. Unlock the pack and peel off the foil. Don't put a tablet in the foil, or you could cause damage to the tablet.
- Make use of dry hands to take off the tablet, then put it in your mouth.
- Don't swallow the tablet completely. Let it dissolve in your mouth, without chewing. If you wish, you can take a drink to help you swallow the tablet that has been dissolved.
Following the intake of a tablet, if your headache does not disappear or is gone but returns, take a second tablet two minutes after you took the first. Don't exceed the dosage of 10 mg of zolmitriptan over 24 hours. If your symptoms haven't been alleviated, consult your physician prior to taking any additional tablets.
Consult your physician if your headache doesn't go away in any way after the first tablet of Zomig.Do not exceed your prescribed dose. The use of too much migraine medication can cause headaches to get worse.Talk to your doctor if you suffer from more than four migraines in a calendar month (30 days). Talk to your doctor if the medication appears to not be working or if you are experiencing migraines.
Zomig can elevate blood pressure to levels that are dangerous. Your blood pressure might require regular monitoring when you take this medication. Your heart's function could need to be assessed by using an electrocardiograph, or ECG (sometimes known as an EKG).Keep at room temperature, away from heat, humidity, and light.

Usual Adult Dose for Migraine:
Oral:
Initial dosage: 1.25 or 2.5 mg orally once (may cut an already scored 2.5 mg tablet into half to get 1.25 mg) and may be repeated in two hours if migraine is not subsided or returns after an improvement in tempo.
Maintenance Dose Adjust the dose according to the individual's response.
Maximum single dose: 5 mg
Daily maximum dosage: 10 mg over an hour
Orally disintegrating tablets:
Initial dosage: 2.5 mg orally once for 2 hours if migraines have not subsided or returned after a brief improvement.
Maintain Dose Modify the dose based on your individual response.
Maximum single dose: 5 mg
Daily maximum dosage: 10 mg within 24 hours
Nasal Spray:
Initial dosage: 2.5 mg intranasally once and repeated every 2 hours in the event that migraine persists or does not resolve after a brief improvement.
Maintenance Dose Adjust the dose depending on the individual's response.
Maximum single dose: 5 mg
Daily maximum dose: 10 mg within 24 hours
Comments:
This medication is only recommended following a confirmed diagnosis of migraine, and if the patient shows no response after the initial migraine attack, it is important to reconsider the diagnosis of migraine prior to treating any further attacks.
Do not damage the tablet's oral disintegration. The tablets are not scored.
In studies that included patients, the majority experienced headache-related symptoms following the administration of a 2.5 milligram or five mg dosage, compared with a dose of one mg, but no additional benefits were observed for a 5 mg dosage as compared to a 2.5 mg dosage; however, negative events were significantly more prevalent.
The security treatment of more than four headaches over 30 days hasn't been proven.
Use: To treat the acute treatment of migraine that includes and without aura.

This drug should only be administered after a definitive diagnosis of migraine is determined. If a patient shows no response to the drug in the initial migraine attack, it is recommended to reconsider the diagnosis of migraine prior to treating any future attacks.
The security treatment of an average of more than four headaches over a period of 30 days isn't known.
Use: For the immediate treatment of migraine that includes and without aura.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Because Zomig is only used when it is necessary, it does not have a regular dosing schedule. Contact your doctor immediately in the event that your symptoms don't improve following the use of Zomig.
What happens if I overdose?
For medical emergencies, seek emergency medical attention or contact the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.
Avoid this
Do not consume Zomig for more than 24 hours prior to or after utilizing another migraine medication, including:
- Ergot medicine: dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, ergonovine, and methylergonovine
Zomig could impair your ability to think or react. Take note of when you drive or do other activities that require you to stay alert.
Side effects of Zomig
See a doctor immediately. If you are experiencing symptoms of an allergy reaction, Zomig: hives; difficulty breathing; or swelling of your lips, face, and throat.
Stop taking Zomig and consult your doctor immediately if you are suffering from:
- Sensation of tightness in your jaw, throat, neck, or chest;
- Rapid or pounding heartbeats; dizziness;
- Extreme stomach pains and bloody diarrhea;
- Heart attack symptoms include chest pressure or pain, pain that is spreading into your shoulder or jaw, nausea, sweating, vomiting,
- Serotonin levels are high in the body and can cause hallucinations, agitation, rapid heart rate, excessive reflexes, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, loss of coordination, and fainting.
Common Zomig side effects can include:
- Discomfort or tightness in your chest or throat;
- Dry mouth, stomach upset;
- The sensation of pressure or a heavy feeling in your body.
- Fatigue, feeling drowsy, feeling tired,
- Flushing (warmth of redness, warmth, or a tingly sensation).

Interaction with other drugs
The use of Zomig when you're taking certain other medications can result in excessive levels of serotonin building up in your body. This is an issue known as "serotonin syndrome" that can lead to death. Consult your physician if you also take:
- Medications to treat depression
- Medicine for treating the symptoms of psychiatric disorders;
- A drug called a narcotic (opioid) medication
- Medicine to reduce vomiting and nausea.
