What is Velphoro?

Velphoro is a binder for phosphate that can help stop the development of hypocalcemia (low amounts of calcium present in the blood) caused by elevated levels of phosphorus.

Velphoro is a medication used to regulate levels of phosphorus for people suffering from chronic kidney disease who are taking dialysis.Velphoro is also used for reasons not mentioned in this medication guide.

Warnings

Follow the directions on the label of your medication and the package. Be sure to inform your health care providers about your medical issues, allergies, and the medicines you are taking.

Before you take this drug

It is not recommended to apply Velphoro if you are allergic to sucroferric oxide.

To be sure Velphoro is suitable for you, ask your doctor if you previously had:

  • Disorder of iron overproduction (hemochromatosis);
  • Liver disease;
  • An intestinal or stomach disorder
  • Stomach or abdominal surgery.

Talk to your doctor before taking Velphoro if you are nursing or pregnant.This medicine is not authorized to be used by anyone less than 18 years old.

How to take Velphoro?

Use Velphoro exactly as directed by your physician. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Your doctor might alter your dosage. Avoid using this medication in smaller or larger quantities or for longer periods than the recommended time.

Velphoro is best when you drink it in conjunction with your meal.The tablet that you chew must be chewed or crushed prior to when you take it in.When you are using Velphoro, it is possible that you will require regular blood tests.Keep this medicine in its original container, at room temperature, and away from heat and moisture.Make sure the bottle is tightly shut when not in use.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Do not take the medicine for as long as you can; however, avoid your missed dosage if you are close to the time of the next dose. Avoid taking two doses at once. Do two doses in one go.

What should be avoided?

Follow the doctor's advice regarding any restrictions on your food, drink, or any activity.

Side effects of Velphoro

See a doctor immediately. If you are experiencing symptoms that you are experiencing an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your lips, face, and tongue,

Common Velphoro side effects can be:

  • Diarrhea;
  • Darker coloration in the bowel movements of your body.

Interaction with other drug

If you are taking levothyroxine, it should be taken for a minimum of 4 hours prior to taking Velphoro.

If you are taking aspirin, doxycycline, or cephalexin, take it about 1 hour prior to the time you start taking Velphoro.

Other drugs can interact with sucroferric oxyhydroxide, such as prescription and non-prescription medications as well as vitamins and herbal products. Inform your health professionals about any medication you are taking in the present and about any medication that you decide to stop or begin taking.
