What is Risperdal Consta?

Risperdal consta is an injection that has a long acting time. It's used to treat schizophrenia in adults. Risperdal consta is used to treat adults with bipolar disorders, which are characterized by episodes of depression and severe mania. Risperdal consta belongs to the class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics. Risperidone changes the activity of natural substances in the mind.

Warnings

Risperdal consta has not been approved for older adults who have dementia or psychosis. You may be more sensitive than usual to extreme temperatures, such as extremely hot or very cold weather. Avoid becoming too hot or dehydrated. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids during hot weather, especially when exercising. You are more likely to dehydrate and become overheated when taking this medication. Risperdal consta may cause side effects that can impair your reactions or thinking. You should be careful when driving or doing anything else that requires alertness and awareness.

Before you take this drug

Risperdal consta should not be used if you have an allergy to paliperidone or risperidone. Risperidone is not approved to be used in this way. It may increase the death risk for older adults who have dementia-related psychosis.

Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that risperdal is safe for you:

  • Heart attack, or heart condition?
  • Dizziness, rapid pulse beats, fainting
  • A stroke is also known as a tia, or "mini stroke."
  • Parkinson’s disease, or a form of dementia known as lewy body dementia.
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Low white blood cell counts
  • A severe reaction of the nervous system when using medicine for anxiety or mood disorders;
  • Diabetes (in yourself or in a member of your family);
  • High cholesterol (or triglycerides);
  • Uncontrolled facial movements (such as lip smacking and frowning; tongue movement or blinking);
  • A seizure;
  • Low bone mineral density;
  • Breast cancer
  • Dehydration
  • Liver or kidney disease

Antipsychotic medication taken in the last three months of pregnancy can cause serious problems for the baby.inform your physician immediately if you suspect being pregnant. Do not stop taking risperdal consta unless your doctor has advised you to. You may find your name on a registry for pregnant women to monitor the effects of risperidone. Risperdal consta can make it harder to become pregnant. Tell your doctor immediately if you observe drowsiness or abnormal movements in the baby.

How to take Risperdal Consta?

Risperdal consta should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor. You may have to continue using your antipsychotic for a few weeks if you are already taking another medication. Do not alter your dosage or schedule without consulting your doctor. Risperdal consta may require you to first take risperidone orally (in pill form or liquid form) prior to receiving injections. Dosage instructions should be followed very closely. Risperdal is administered by deep intramuscular injection (im). Healthcare provider will administer this injection. Risperdal consta can be given every two weeks. You may need to have your blood tested frequently. You will be required to have regular check-ups with your doctor and may require other medical tests.

Adult dose of risperdal consta:

Long-acting im injection:
initial dosage: 25 mg intramuscular injection once every 2 weeks for 2 doses total of 50 mg.
Titration dosage: increase to 37.5mg or 50mg if necessary; dose titration shouldn't be more than once every four weeks, as the expected drug release begins 3 weeks after injection.
Maximum dose of 50 mg im once every two weeks

Adult dose of risperdal consta:

The usual geriatric dose of risperdal for bipolar disorder is:

Long-acting im injection:
initial dosage: 25 mg intramuscular injection once every 2 weeks for 2 doses total of 50 mg.
Titration dose: increase to 37.5mg or 50mg if necessary; dosing titrations should not exceed every four weeks, as the expected drug release begins 3 weeks after injection.
Maximum dose: 50 mg im every 2 weeks.

Comments:
it is recommended that patients who have not taken oral risperidone before establish their tolerance with the oral formulation first.
Should only be given by a healthcare professional via deep im gluteal or deltoid injection. Do not give ivs.
Elderly patients have a higher tendency to have orthostatic hypertension. Careful titration and monitoring of orthostatic vital signs should be considered.
To ensure that adequate therapeutic plasma levels are maintained before the main release phase, oral risperidone or another antipsychotic should be administered for three weeks after the first injection.
Some patients who do not respond to the 25mg dose may benefit from taking a 37.5mg or 50mg dose. Patients with a history of poor tolerance to psychotropic medication may also benefit from starting at a lower dose of 12.5. However, the effectiveness of this dose has not yet been tested in clinical trials.

What should be avoided?

Avoid alcohol. It can have dangerous side effects. Drink enough fluids to avoid becoming dehydrated or overheated during exercise or in hot weather. You should follow your doctor's advice on the amount and type of fluids to drink. Drinking too much liquid is as dangerous as not drinking enough. Risperdal congestion can cause dizziness. Avoid driving and other dangerous activities until you are sure how they will affect you. You may become dizzy if you get up quickly from a seated or lying position. Dizziness and drowsiness may cause accidents or serious injuries.

Side effects of Risperdal Consta

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in your lips, face, throat, or tongue, seek emergency medical attention. Risperidone in high doses or for a long time can cause serious movement disorders that are not always reversible. Risperdal consta can cause serious movement disorders, which may not be reversible.

Risperdal consta may cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Uncontrolled facial movements (such as lip smacking and frowning; tongue movement or blinking);
  • Breast swelling and tenderness; nipple discharge; loss of interest in sexual activity; impotence; erectile dysfunction; difficulty having orgasms; missed periods
  • Feeling unusually cold or hot
  • low blood pressure. Fast or pounding pulses.
  • Shortness of breath and sudden dizziness
  • Seizure;
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Signs of infection: fever; sore throat; body aches; unusual fatigue; loss of appetite; and bruising.
  • Severe nervous system reaction: very stiff (rigid muscles), high fever, sweating and confusion, rapid or uneven heartbeats tremors. Feeling like you may pass out.
  • High blood sugar: increased thirst, increased urination, and a fruity breath smell;
  • Low blood cell counts can be accompanied by fever, chills, and tiredness. They may also include mouth sores or skin sores.
  • An erection that is painful or long.

risperdal consta may cause the following side effects:

  • headache;

Interaction with other drug

Risperdal consta can make you more drowsy. Before taking an opioid, a sleeping tablet, a muscle-relaxing medication, or medicine to treat anxiety or seizures, consult your doctor. It is sometimes not safe to take certain medications at the same time. Some drugs may affect the blood levels of drugs that you are taking, which can increase side effects and make them less effective.
