What is Rectiv?

The Rectiv ointment is a nitrate containing nitroglycerin. This nitrate dilates or widens blood vessels.The rectum ointment can be used to relieve moderate to severe pain from chronic rectal fissures.Rectiv can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Rectiv

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat, and/or hives, seek emergency medical attention.

If you experience:

  • If you feel your heart pounding or your chest fluttering, then this is a sign that it's time to seek medical attention.
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Feeling lightheaded, like you might pass out.
  • Heart attack symptoms: pain in the chest or pressure, spreading pain to your shoulder or jaw, nausea, and sweating.

Nitroglycerin can cause severe headaches. As you continue using Rectiv, these headaches may become less severe. Continue to use this medication. Before taking any medication to relieve headache pain, consult your doctor.

Rectiv can cause a variety of side effects.

Warnings

Do not use Rectiv Ointment in the event of severe anemia (a shortage of red blood cells), a brain injury, hemorrhage, or tumor.This medicine should also not be used if you use medicine to treat pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH), such as riociguat (Adempas), tadalafil, or sildenafil.Avoid taking erectile dysfunction medicine (Viagra and Cialis) when you're using Rectiv. You could experience a serious drop in your blood pressure.Tell your doctor before using Rectiv if you suffer from congestive cardiac failure, low blood pressure, glaucoma, or liver disease. Also, mention a history of a heart attack, stroke, or circulation problems.Rectiv should not be used without consulting a physician if you are experiencing early symptoms of a heart attack (chest discomfort or a heavy feeling, pain that spreads to your arm or shoulder, or nausea, sweating, or a general feeling of unwellness). If you experience symptoms of a cardiac arrest, seek emergency medical care.Rectiv may cause severe headaches that occur every time you take the drug. Your doctor may prescribe an aspirin-free pain reliever, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen), to treat fever and pain. Use the medicine according to the directions on the bottle or those given by your doctor.

Before you take this drug

Rectiv is not recommended for people who are allergic to nitroglycerin or have any of the following conditions:

  • The condition of anemia occurs when there is not enough blood.
  • Increased pressure inside the head;
  • If you are also taking erectile dysfunction medicines such as Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Stendra, Staxyn, sildenafil, avanafil, tadalafil, or vardenafil,

Do not use Rectiv if you have early signs of a heart attack (chest or heavy feeling; pain spreading up the arm, shoulder, or neck; nausea or a general feeling of unwellness). If you experience symptoms of a cardiac arrest, seek emergency medical care.

Inform your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • Congestive heart failure;
  • Heart attack;
  • A blood vessel disorder;
  • Low blood pressure

Tell your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.Anyone younger than 18 is not allowed to use Rectiv.

How to take Rectiv?

Rectiv ointment should be used exactly as directed by your doctor. Read all the instructions on the prescription label.Rectiv can cause severe migraines. Before taking any pain medication, consult your doctor.You may need to wait up to three weeks for your symptoms to appear. Continue to use Rectiv as directed. Tell your doctor if you feel your symptoms are not improving or getting worse.Keep away from heat or moisture When not in use, keep the tube tightly shut. You should throw away any Rectiv ointment that you haven't used in 8 weeks from the time you opened the tube.

Details on dosage

Apply Rectiv ointment (1 inch) intra-anally (375mg of ointment equals 1.5 mg of nitroglycerin). Do this every 12 hours, for up to three weeks. To apply the ointment, a finger covering such as a plastic wrap, disposable surgical glove, or cot should be used. The covered finger should be placed along the dosing line of the carton, which is 1 inch. This will give you a dose of 1.5 mg of nitroglycerin.The tube should be gently squeezed so that a line the length of the measuring lines is applied to the finger covered. The ointment should be inserted gently into the anal channel using the covered finger, but not beyond the first joint. It is then applied to the sides of the canal. In the event that this is not possible due to pain, the ointment can be applied directly on the outside of the anus. The treatment can be continued for up to three weeks.Rectiv ointment should not be used for intravaginal, ophthalmic, or oral use. After applying the ointment, wash your hands.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Skip the missed dose if you're almost due to take your next dose. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical care. Nitroglycerin overdoses can be deadly.Overdose symptoms include a severe headache, confusion or fever, a fast or pounding pulse, dizziness, and vision problems. Other symptoms include bloody diarrhea or vomiting.

What should be avoided?

You may get dizzy if you stand up quickly from a seated or lying position.Alcohol can cause side effects like dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting.Do not get this medication in your mouth, eyes, or vagina.

Interaction with other drug

Tell your doctor all of your current medications, including:

  • Aspirin, or Heparin.
  • Medicine used to treat blood clots
  • Blood pressure medication
  • Ergot medicine: dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, ergonovine, and methylergonovine.
  • Other nitroglycerin medications
