What is Naloxegol?

Naloxegol helps reduce constipation due to opioid pain medicine that is used to treat chronic, persistent pain. Naloxegol helps treat constipation but does not reduce the pain-relieving effects of opioids.

Naloxegol is a treatment for those who have taken opioid pain medications for at least 4 weeks to relieve chronic pain not caused by cancer.Naloxegol can also be used for reasons not mentioned in this guideline.

Side effects of Naloxegol

See a doctor immediately. Get medical attention immediately if you notice symptoms that indicate an allergic reaction, like hives, trouble breathing, and swelling of your lips, face, or tongue.

Naloxegol may cause serious side effects. Consult your physician immediately in the event of:

  • Symptoms of opioid withdrawal include anxiety and feeling uneasy, sweating, nausea, chills, and stomach pain, as well as vomiting.

Stop taking Naloxegol immediately and call your doctor immediately. If you are suffering from:

  • Intense stomach pain that will never go away;
  • Severe diarrhoea.

Common negative side effects of naloxegol include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain;
  • Diarrhoea, gas,
  • Headache.

Warnings

It is not recommended to use naloxegol in the event of an obstruction in the stomach or intestines.Consult your physician when you experience symptoms of withdrawal from opioids, like anxiety, feeling angry, sweating, chills, stomach pain, yawning, and diarrhoea.

Stop taking Naloxegol and contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe diarrhoea or stomach pain (which can cause serious medical issues).Discuss with your doctor all the medicines you currently take and all the ones you begin or stop taking. A variety of drugs interact, and certain medications should not be taken together.

Before you take this drug

It is not recommended to take Naloxegol in the event that you are allergic to the drug or suffer from:

  • A blockage in your stomach or your intestines.

Certain medications can trigger unwanted or harmful effects when used in conjunction with Naloxegol. Your doctor may have to modify your treatment in the event that you use any of the following:

  • Certain medications;
  • Antifungal medicine;
  • Heart medicine heart medication
  • Antiviral medicine for treating hepatitis C and HIV.

Inform your doctor if you have ever suffered from:

  • Stomach or intestinal disorders (including diverticulitis or ischemic colitis);
  • Stomach cancer, colorectal cancer;
  • Perforations (a tear or a hole) within your oesophagus, stomach, or intestines
  • Recent surgical procedure of the stomach, intestines,
  • Kidney disease or liver problems

If you take Naloxegol when you are pregnant, the baby may experience withdrawal symptoms from opioids. Tell your doctor whether you are expecting or planning to be pregnant.Don't breastfeed when taking Naloxegol.Naloxegol is not a drug that has been approved for use by anyone less than 18 years of age.

How to Take Naloxegol?

Follow all instructions on your prescription label and review all medication guides and instruction sheets. Follow the medication precisely as directed.Use Naloxegol with a full stomach at least an hour before or 2 hours following eating your breakfast of the day.

If you're unable to consume the Naloxegol tablet completely, you can crush the tablet into a powder and mix the powder with 4 ounces of water. Mix it well, and drink the mixture immediately. For the maximum amount, add a bit more water to the glass, stir gently, and then drink it right away.

Naloxegol is also available via an nasogastric (NG) tube for feeding. Take note of and adhere to any instructions for use that come with your medication. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor for clarification if you are unsure of these directions.Consult your physician if symptoms don't improve after three days.After stopping your pain medicine and quitting using Naloxegol,Keep at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.

Details on dosage

Usual Adult Dose for Constipation (Drug-Induced:

Opioid-Induced Constipation (Chronic):
Initial dosage: 25 mg orally every day, once
Maintenance dosage: 25 mg taken orally per day. The dose can be reduced to 12.5 mg taken orally every day for patients who cannot endure a higher dose.
Comments: Prior to starting, stop all maintenance laxative treatment; laxatives can be utilised as required for a suboptimal response within three days.
Use: To treat constipation caused by opioids among adults with chronic pain that is not cancerous.

What happens If I Miss a dose?

You should take the medication as quickly as you are able, but avoid any missed doses if it's close to the time of the next dose. Don't take two doses at once.

What should be avoided?

Do not take any other laxatives or other medications that your doctor hasn't recommended.

Grapefruit could interact with naloxegol and lead to adverse negative side effects. Beware of grapefruit-related products.

Interaction with other drugs

It is sometimes not safe to take certain medications together. Certain drugs may affect the blood levels of other medications that you are taking. This could create side effects or render the drugs less effective.

Discuss with your doctor any other medications you take, particularly bevacizumab.
