What is Molindone?

Molindone is an antipsychotic medication used for treating schizophrenia.

Molindone can be used in other ways not mentioned in the medication guide.

Side effects of Molindone

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergy reaction: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in lips, face, throat or tongue and difficulty swallowing or breathing normally. Seek medical assistance immediately.

Molindone in high doses and long-term usage can lead to a severe movement disorder. This may be irreversible. You are more likely to get this movement disorder if you have been using molindone for a long time, particularly if you're a woman or older.

Molindone can cause severe side effects. If you experience:

  • Any new and unusual muscular movements that you are unable to control.
  • A tremor is an uncontrolled shaking.
  • Trouble swallowing or breathing;
  • A seizure (convulsions);
  • Women with irregular periods, vaginal or breast changes, and nipple discharge.
  • Breast swelling in men and impotence
  • Severe nervous system reaction: very stiff muscles (rigid), high fever, sweating, and confusion; rapid or irregular heartbeats or tremors; feeling as if you are about to pass out.
  • Low white blood cells—fever and chills; sore throat; mouth sores or skin sores.

Molindone can cause the following side effects:

  • Drowsiness;
  • Rapid heart rate; feeling restless, naive, or uneasy; unable to stay still.
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry Mouth

  • Little or no urine;
  • Nausea, constipation;
  • Breast swelling or discharge;
  • Impotence and sexual disorders
  • Changes in menstrual cycles

Warnings

If you are unable to concentrate due to taking alcohol or certain drugs, then do not take molindone.

Molindone has not been approved to be used in patients with dementia or psychosis.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to molindone, then:

  • If you experience a decrease in alertness due to taking certain drugs or alcohol,.

Molindone is not recommended for use in this setting. It may cause death among older people with psychosis related to dementia.

If you've ever:

  • Epilepsy

  • Low white blood cell (WBC) count;
  • Urination issues;
  • Breast Cancer.

Antipsychotic medications taken during the last three months of gestation may lead to breathing and feeding difficulties for your unborn infant, as well as withdrawal symptoms. It's important to notify your healthcare provider if you become pregnant; do not discontinue molindone without consulting with him first.

Molindone is unknown to pass into breast milk or harm nursing babies. You should tell your doctor that you are breastfeeding a child.

You may be unable to breastfeed if you are using molindone. You should consult your doctor if you are concerned about a possible risk.

How to take Molindone?

Read all the instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow the directions. Sometimes, your doctor will change the dose. Your medication must be taken exactly as prescribed.

It is possible that you may not feel better immediately after starting molindone. Use the drug as prescribed to get the best results.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for schizophrenia:

The initial dosing schedule:
Dosage: Orally, 50–75 mg per day. Increase the dosage to 100 mg per day in three to four days.
Maximum dose: 225 mg/day

Maintenance Schedule
Mild symptoms: Take 5–15 mg 3–4 times daily.
If you have moderate symptoms, take 10–25 mg 3–4 times per day.
Severe symptoms: up to 225 mg/day

Comments:
Patients with severe symptoms may need 225 mg per day.
Patients who are elderly or debilitated should start with the lowest dosage.

Treatment of schizophrenia

The Usual Pediatric Dose of Schizophrenia in Children:

From 12 to 18 years old:
The initial dosage schedule:
Dosage: Orally, 50–75 mg per day. Increase the dosage to 100 mg/day after 3–4 days.
Maximum dose: 225 mg/day

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for the next dose, skip the missed one. Never take more than one dose at a time.

What happens if I overdose?

What should be avoided?

Don't drink alcohol. Side effects and death can occur.

Do not drive or operate machinery until you have experienced the effects of molindone. You may get dizzy if you stand up quickly from a seated or lying-down position. Drowsiness or dizziness can lead to accidents or serious injuries.

Interaction with other drug

Asking your doctor about opioid medications, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, anxiety medication, or seizure medicine can lead to dangerous side effects.

Inform your physician of all medications taken, including:

  • Phenytoin;
  • An antibiotic, such as doxycycline or minocycline.
